Great to finally be a member of this great forum!

I actually owned a V8 Soarer back in 2005 and missed it ever since I sold it.. So when I saw this late model 96/97 Pearl White Limited, I just had to have it! Its only done 47000klms and came with the plates as well.

Looking forward to participating!

Need to take some better photos -

Thanks guys, the information on this forum is amazing. Its also nice how polite and mature the members communicate with each other. Many other auto forums I've seen are full of 10 year olds arguing with each other in SMS speak!

I've personally found this forum to be a fount of knowledge, many members extremely helpful. SMS-speak is banned on this forum for good reason (it's garbage), and by-and-large members are very courteous towards each other. My only regret is the spellcheck doesn't weed out American spellings!

Yes I noticed that with the spell check..
You just reminded me of my old English teacher who would mark down essays for using American spelling haha!

Andrew, if you must know the picture looks "funny" because I've taken out where it said Carsales. I don't have any other pictures of my car yet. In relation to the tyres fitted - I'm not a doctor, but I don't think its physically possible for tyres to be anorexic.

If I were an English teacher I'd be marking people down for using US spellings too (as did my last prof. at uni in 2007, coincidentally, in English!). There is absolutely no need to spell tyre as "tire", for instance. The Yanks have done enough to the language without perpetrating further injury.

I'll turn into a spelling Nazi at this rate :-)!

I culled a lot of American spelling when I created the dictionary, but the example above of tyre/tire shows that some words can't be culled.

Another pet peeve of mine is break/brake. What the fook were schools doing during the 80's and 90's?

Yes, it's impossible to cull words which are homophones for something else, just as incorrectly placed apostrophes can't be- because words like "Soarer's" is correct in other contexts. I agree with you about brakes and breaks, and you're right about schooling in 80s and 90s, the emphasis went right off correct spelling. As a weather person I become rather annoyed when people mix up weather, whether and wether (and as someone who's spent a little time on sheep stations, I get annoyed by media types talking about "herds of sheep"- whatever happened to "flock")?

I did a unit at Uni where the lecturer was a real spelling Nazi, which is fine by me except that his course notes were absolutely chock-a-block with spelling errors and typos. He went a bit quiet when I sent him the list of his own errors!

I didn't realise the topic would ignite such passionate discussion..
I'm forever going to have a complex about my spelling and grammar now..

Actually while we are on the subject, I once knew a Lecturer in Archaeology who would mark down students for using terms such as "mankind" instead of "humankind" because she felt the word was sexist!

Don't be too paranoid, Kadir. Nobody will chastise you (except Peter, if you use mobile phone gobbledygook, and your English sounds fine to me at least!).

I'm envious that you studied Archaeology, as a distance student I couldn't cope with the residential schools (living as I have in the outback or on remote islands). UNE was pretty hard on so-called "sexist" language too. My retort to some of the more over the top female PC'ers was "are you a woMAN or a WO-person"?

No, not too worried..

Mike I didn't study Archaeology, I studied Architecture (Though I'm not working as an Architect) but I did work for this particular Archaeologist who I mentioned. She was actually a part time lecturer who otherwise worked as a consultant to the government. It was fascinating work. My job was to piece together bits and pieces of broken glass, plastic etc from large samples dug up from the Eastern freeway upgrade a couple of years ago. There was actually an old Hotel which burnt down in the early 1900s under where the road is now. Its sounds excruciatingly boring, but I loved the satisfaction of eventually putting together whole pieice of early Victorian China. - I love Antiques. There's quite an art to documenting and preserving artifacts, it's quite interesting.

ANYWAY.

At Deakin in Geelong, we had a "Womyn's" Room - Yes, with that spelling! I mean really, how ridiculous! Talk about sexist.

Really gone way off topic now.

Doesn't matter, it's a "say g'day" thread anyway!

Womyn is a supposedly "non-sexist" way of saying woman, but those who've coined the word don't understand the etymology of the word 'man' (which originally in Old English referred to all human people). Wæpman and wifman were the gender- specific names for men and women respectively, but "man" replaced wæpman (pronounced, I think, wethman) for males while wifman became woman for females. As you might have guessed, my last Uni unit was "History of the English Language".

Now that's really "off topic":-)!

Wow, I didn't know that. I would prefer using Old English than a bastardised version of a real word. Having said that, they say language is evolutionary.

Just realised you're in WA. I'm in Karratha at the moment. I'll be moving up to Derby next year though, so if you're ever up north let me know. I'm actually getting my car shipped up to Derby, which is very expensive! (from Melbourne)

Old English started a rapid change in 1066, so English as we know it is has had 950 years to evolve!

We're in Exmouth, but leaving in 9 days...to a mining town in W NSW (Cobar).

1066 was important for English because the Saxon nobility was near annihilated so nobles then all spoke Norman French (explaining word pairs like cow(OE)/beef(NF), sheep/mutton, deer/venison: the English-speaking peasants grew the food, the French nobles ate it! Then there were spurts of change with influxes from Paris French, Latin (church) and from the British Empire (loan words). There were even periods of many word coinages (I wonder how many people know the word "zany" was a Shakespearean invention?) and then science added huge numbers of words for new concepts mostly from Greek and Latin.

On top of all that the Vikings had an impact- "shirt" is OE, "skirt" is Norse, but they used to mean the same thing.

I've lived in Cobar before, it's not bad. We should have been in WA longer, the young bloke in Cobar decided he'd like to go to WA, and applied for Port Hedland: you'll hear him on radio ABC Northwest (based in Karratha) as you would have heard me, as we share morning weather radio crosses with Port Hedland. WA is fabulous for the scenery, beaches and landscapes, and virtually every plant and bird you see is native, unlike the rampantly weedy and Mynah-infested east.

What's taking you to Karratha, Kadir?

What is that? Are they gay communication devices?
Maybe there's some other word which means the same?????

"unlike the rampantly weedy and Mynah-infested east" - I'm going to avoid the East/West argument.. for now. Except to say the only reason flora and fauna are so well preserved in WA is that no one wants to live there (therefore less human intervention)

Mike T, I'm in Karratha because my partner is currently working on contract here. We were previously living in Halls Creek, and will be moving to Derby soon. Personally I've been working for TNT couriers driving trucks.

I quit my real job (IT) so we could be together while doing the remote contract gig for the next 4 years.

I'm an Easterner born and bred, but I do enjoy the wildlife in WA (even it's all to eager to jump in front of my car:-)) Parts of the coast near Northhampton and Yanchep are just unbelievable in terms of floral beauty.

I don't envy you living in Derby, one of the hottest places in this country. Halls Creek isn't much better. Mind you it was 43 at Learmonth today and around 40C forecast for the next week! At least LM/Exmouth has a winter though!

I've never been to Kimberleys, as I have my long break in Xmas school holidays we have always taken the southern route as it's too hot to the north, and there's the risk of road closures from cyclones. I did fly around the Wyndham area many years ago when working in coastal surveillance (out of Darwin) and it was unbelievably beautiful. We were going to go up to Broome next winter, but I've been posted much earlier than expected.

I never actually set foot in Wyndham, Kadir, I just flew over and around it many years ago when doing coastal surveillance (Indonesian and Taiwanese fisherman, and the last of the Vietnamese refugee boats, as well as drug-running yachts:-)). Never been north of Exmouth, in fact. We had intended doing a trip north next winter, but as I mentioned earlier, got posted east earlier than expected. Might have to wait now for my "grey nomad" days to see the Kimberleys- in winter:-)

Talking about heat... we had 48.9C last Saturday, a record for any month for Learmonth (old record 48.2 set in 2003). Luckily the humidity was down to 4-7%, otherwise it would have felt worse.
