I guess once they go cloudy, and whatever you have to do to remove the haze (polish or sandpaper), will mean you are removing the original UV protect-ant anyway, so either way they will go cloudy I think.

Edit - Meguiars have a product called PlastX, which is made for polishing and cleaning plastics such as headlights, it says it has polymers to protect against water but not sure about UV. From what I have read it doesn't last that long until the headlights begin to fade away again.

There is a product though Called Malco Headlight Sealant, which offers UV Protection.

Somebody should give it a try.

You guys sure go to some extremities for headlights. I just use the same cutting compound I use to wax the car, then Meth spirits after. Sometimes just the methylated spirits alone. Another alternative is metal polish. Much less work needed to get them looking like new.

Because lots of people have problems with lights going hazy.

I too use the same cutting compound I use for the car, makes them nice and shiny.

Meguiars Tech Wax 2.0 is very good, try it out Natasha. The ones that come in a tin though do take a bit more effort to buff than liquid ones in a bottle.

Indeed, you can cut 2 pac fine, but not if it has been clear-coated or it will just haze the clear coat and look terrible.

Clear coating is a separate process applied after painting.

Not all Soarers have a factory clear coat - in fact most "mica" (metalic) colours dont seem to. Not sure why.

you will find nearly every metallic paint mica or not is clear coated. all mettallics dry flat, thats the point of the clear coat, to bring the gloss out.

and as for cutting the clear, you can also do that as well, wet and dry to cut back any peeling or in the paint then buff and polish it.

dont know who is feeding you your info, but sorry to say they are wrong.

What would be the effects then of polishing Metalic Mica that is not clearcoated, you will polish away the metallic and make it look uneven.

it has to have clear coat , as i said metallics dry flat then clear is applied for the gloss.

Actually, with two pack, the base coat is very soft until the clearcoat is added. The clearcoat has the hardener in it to bind the whole paint process together as one.

Just going off cars I've owned. My current Soarer definitely doesn't have a clear coat (wine red mica) and is quite shiney. My FSG Soarer did have a clear coat. My Mazda MS-8 blue metalic did not have a clear coat etc.

I would have thought car paint would be like any other paint, if you buy a gloss finish paint, you will get a gloss finish, if you buy a semi or a flat, you will not? I know nothing about professional car painting so like I said I'm just going off the cars I've owned.

wish i was in NZ i would come and rub your nose it that clear coat lol.

i will put my left nut on it that it has a clear coat on it,Not that you would want my nut lol

you mean to tell me i have been wasting all that clear i put on Metallic paint for the last 15 years!!DOH!!

your right in one aspect, you know nothing about professional car painting .

PS. the reson why your red wine mica is shiney is because of the 2 pac clear coat on it .

All the Soarers i've seen have clear coat, I thought only some cars made in the 70's and earlier didn't have clear.

However you can Machine buff it and comes up like glass.

My wine red mica(3K3) definitely does have a clear coat, because it is peeling off the front bumper and leaving the horrible, dull looking mica base coat exposed.

I tried putting clear back over it, but the damage is done. Needs stripping and repainting. Only took about a year to go from beautiful with a mark to almost completely shiite.
