Good Evening everybody, with in the next couple of days I will once again be embarking on another mission to drive home another Sc400 limited, this time from Queensland.
Just for something different I thought I would post it up here before I left in the hope of maybe, being able to catch up with other club members on the way.
I am not going to be coming straight home as I do want to stop past Rush Imports and have a chat to the guru of all things that go fast HA HA HA Uncle Neil and pick up a set of extractors if he still has any left.
I will try to put up some pics as well for all to see, I just hope she is as good as the ebay pics show.

You da man! I just got back from Brisbane to have a look at a soarer I bought 97 blk/blk V8 but I dont have time to drive it with work so its getting trucked. Its only around $1200 so it will be cheaper than driving and less dangerous. PM me if you want the quote I've got.

Thanks Joshua but I am driving it back a bit to late thou should of trucked it, however what is done is done. It is an awesome drive as the car is in good working order. Which this one is not as yet but will be by Tuesday arvo, thanks too Neil and his son Tim.

I am disappointed in the fact that what the bloke had told me on the phone and shown me on the net wasn't true, and the whole thing was basic a big effort too try and sham me I don't think he realized who he was dealing with.

I left Brisbane or should I say Goodna at about 10am Friday and got too Ballina by 2pm at that point the cars temp had gone one bar over half way and seeing that all my others have never ever got that hot before I called into the radiator shops Ballina to see if I could get a flush done.
It was then that I found a split in the header tank, and after the bloke at the radiator shop took off the hose from the thermostat housing he discovered that not only was it cracked but most of it was missing and after trying to find another one and only being able to find a falcon one that would have to be modified to be fitted, he refused to do a flush on it or let me use his tools to modify the falcon one to fit . the only thing he did was put it back together fill it with water and push it out side of his shop.

So after some handy work with some Loctite 406 and some fiberglass to fix the crack in the header tank and finding a 20 litre drum for water I headed off about 5:30pm toward Sydney.
At about 7:30pm and about seven stops because of over heating and fourteen litres off water later, I had stopped again this time near a cane field, because for some reason it appeared that I was not getting enough water into the radiator system because it was now over heating way to quickly and it appeared to still have air in the system somewhere.
So after it had cooled down I was trying to figure out a way to get more water into the system as it appeared there was not enough getting in there, so I thought maybe there was some air that was unable to get out. While I was trying to get the get the top radiator hose off
to pour into it, a bloke stopped and asked me what was wrong and if I needed anything, so jokingly I told him I was over heating and I needed a shed, a compressor and some tools to fix it, the bloke who's name was Tim McMahon said can you limp it 200 meters up that track and I said for sure.
When I got up the track, he opened up the shed and there was a typical farmers shed with everything I needed to modify and try to fit it.
By 11pm that night I had pulled out the radiator and crudely flushed it out and the motor, modified the ea falcon thermostat housing I had bought to bolt up and extended the bottom radiator hose with a bit of high pressure suction hose to fit.
He had some blue Case tractor anti freeze anti boil coolant we put in it and after thanking him 100 thousand times I was back on my way again.

I sat at on about 100kmh for about three hours everything was running fine so I decided to take it up 110 and she went alright for about 30mins then started to get hotter so I dropped the speed back to 90 and popped the bonnet up and kept driving to see if her temp dropped which it did and stayed at that for about another hour when the suction hose blew 19km north of Tarree at 4:30 am.
I then tried to wave some one down for a lift too the next service station to see if they had a radiator hose I could buy but nobody would stop so I walked the 19km into Tarree and found out that sevice stations don't have any radiator hoses in them so I wait until supercheap opened and then bought what I needed and got going again, I made it too Sydney at about 3pm Saturday in time too vote, stayed booked a hotel for a couple of nights so I can get the car fixed to get home.
Drove the car today to The Guru of all things fast (Neils) workshop today and I should be going again by Tuesday afternoon all things going well.

Shattering! Bad enough to sell a dodgy car on to anyone else, let alone someone you know is driving thousands of kilometers home in it!

Good job with the running repairs though, and great story - reminds me of some of my breakdowns over the years! Eventually it'll be something to look back on fondly as an adventure, instead of with the blinding rage and frustration you are probably feeling now!

Holly hell.

What a saga indeed.

I suppose this is the risk one takes in buying a used car and driving it long distances without knowing its faults.

When I picked up my UZZ30 in September unseen apart from some internet pictures, It was better than expect, the perfect buy so had no struggle or problems on the 700 odd KM drive home.

I probably wouldn't do that again though, would want to have the car inspect before I did something similar.

Yeah people trying to sell their cars with lies . just DOES NOT WORK.

Me and 3 mates drove from canberra to albury once to meet up with a guy to look at a vl.
The guy drove from melbourne with the car on a trailer.

We Rented our car trailer and
drove down.

Turns out his definition of immaculate over the phone wasn't the same as our definition of immaculate. So we drove back. and he drove back wit the car still on the trailer.

And he flat out lied about almost everything.
If he had of actually told the truth we probably would of bought the thing.

I flew from Hobart and bought my Soarer in Adelaide off EBay. Exchange took place in Adelaide Airport car park. Seller had 3 big surly looking mates with him, so I couldn't really turn around and tell him that the car he was selling me was NOTHING LIKE its EBay description and I wasn't going to buy it.
Not only did it look like it had been sitting in a chook pen for a month, but the A/C, EMV and dash weren't working, one airbag was stuffed, the rear tyres were through to the belts and the steering was seriously out of alignment - and the seller KNEW I had to drive it back to Hobart!
(Probably the most nerve-wracking drive of my life!)
I've since looked at several cars advertised on line and the reality almost NEVER matches the photos.

Rule #1: NEVER buy sight-unseen!

Gees Josh, how hard do you drive them?
What a saga James.
It takes true grit to work a situation like that and come out on top.
The up sides are you might have got the car cheap and you've got some great beer stories.
I could very well have been in a somewhat similar situation two weeks ago.
Got the train to Moss Vale on the NSW coast to pick up a UZZ31 V8 sight unseen, with a 700km drive ahead of me to get it home.
Nsw registered but no RWC or slip thing.
Just went on what he told me about it.
Got it from a guy who claimed to be an ex car dealer himself. (alarm bells?)
Supposedly owned by an elderly couple who had it since import in 2003, a replaced dash that said 15000 and he claimed it has 115000 on it.
Elderly retired couple in a V8 Soarer?
A 1996 car with only 115000 on it?
Sounds like a total pitch yes?
He picked me up in Moss Vale in the dark and drove me to his place in it on the coast.
It was only then I got a good look at it.
What a fricken gem!
Turns out it's all true!
I've even found the original owners through total chance with a scrap of paper I found under the drivers seat.
He, a retired engineer, loved the car, never had any issues with it. Kept it tip top.
I'm really really glad!
In hindsight I would never do that again.
I'd even blow a small deposit and the cost of getting it checked out before I went to the trouble of traveling somewhere and all the hassle that comes with it.
I like an adventure as much a anybody, but ones that end up costing thousands suck.
Oh and John, no slight on you here but I guess thats a lesson learned on your part.
My two cents to others when it comes to buying and such, never ever let anybody push you into buying something thats not as stated in a selling description. You have very clear rights in these situations.
Consumer protection is a very serious part of law and all you have to do mention the ploice and if they're dodgy it wont take long for them to walk away.

You're correct, Jack - funnily enough I'm about to take delivery of my new Soarer from Victoria, also a "white lady" but a little older than yours. Had a really good look at it a week or two ago while I was on the mainland delivering my 300zx to its new owner in Brisbane! So I was rather interested in reading a thread about epic drives!
My new car is in absolutely superb condition, having been owned by one fastidious enthusiast for all of its 8 years in Australia.
North Bruny, eh? Good choice - What a piece of paradise that is!
Yes, keep in touch - lots of Soarer owners down here!

Yes Allan I do have his name number and address and there is a Bottle of Bookers Bourbon arriving at his door any day now.

Update Time: On Tuesday morning the new radiator arrived at the workshop, so I started by flushing and degreasing the motor and then replacing the radiator.
The new radiator went in with out too many drama's, a few modifications were needed but that is to be expected with any after market item, however it did take me longer then I had expected it too take me.
I started the car up and it was running like a pig and I just put that down to the fact the I must have got water near the plugs that I obviously had not been able too blow off and it would be alright with a little drive like my falcon is back at home after I degrease her,
(But it was at this moment I should of have tattooed on my forehead D__KHEAD and should of known better) I was also running way late and had to check of the hotel so I packed up everything and headed down the hotel in her she ran like crap the whole way there with no signs of clearing up, however the temp had only moved up 1 notch from the cool mark which I thought was at least one good thing that is was not getting hot anymore.
So I checked out and was on my way back to the workshop to blow out the plugs and get rid of any water I missed when I blew it down before.
About half way back to the workshop I started noticing smoke coming out the back of the car so I pulled over and popped the bonnet to see flames coming from around the cat on the passengers side, so I raced to the boot grabbing my 20 litre water container and flooded it, but there was still smoking so I looked underneath to see more flames so I grabbed the jack and jacked up the side as quick as I could to get some water on them, with them out I thought I had got it out but then when I stood up the whole inside of the car was filled full of smoke and as I opened the passenger door there where flames coming through he carpet, so again flooded the area then proceeded to inspect every where else.
With the fire out I called Neils son Tim who rang a tilt tray and transported it back to the workshop.
It was getting late by then so I organised a hotel room for the night.
The next morning I went back to inspect the damage and from what I have gathered is that the cat has had to much unburnt fuel going into it which has caused it to get hot enough to melt the sensor wire and set it alight and the fire has the traveled onto the plastic cover of the fuel lines and up the sensor wire into the passenger side of the car and down towards to ecu. From everything I have seen, I think we were very lucky to have got it out and to be alive so obviously the car is now on a truck on it's way back to here and we flew home.

I do have too mention a huge thanks to Neil and his son Tim whose help was so greatly appreciated I don't know any other words to say that can convey how much their help has meant to me, and a special thanks to Dragi from Day and Night towing for all his help in getting the car to the Toll transporting depo.
But in saying all of that what a great adventure and I would do the trip again and for sure somethings different, even if only to meet some wonderful fantastic people again it would still be worth while.
