Hi All
I bought my first Soarer on Monday , it's a 1991 Japanese import and needs some work.
Despite having low profile tyres and something wrong with the right rear suspension it drives quite well.
The motor and transmission seem good even with 250,000km (155,000 miles)on the clock , I think it needs the valve clearance looked at because there's a faint ticking at idle.
My major concern at the moment is that it has been run with water instead of coolant , am about to fix that and flush the cooling system.
The interior need some work to sort the rattles , but I am guessing most of that is the missing screws on the door cards.
There doesn’t seem to be too many electrical issues.
The cruse control isn't working and I think there's an error message coming up on the dash , pity I can't read Japanese.
I have had a quick look through the forum and found a few very handy and informative threads so far , will have a look for error codes when I have the time.

Upload

So far all I have done is change the engine oil & filter , removed the roof racks , given the headlights a quick polish and had the exhaust extended out the back of the car.
A previous owner had removed the rear mufflers and not replaced them with anything , i didn't want to attract the attention of the Police or get carbon-monoxide poisoning.

Just found the "Dash Warning Messages" thread, looks like either Brake System or Engine electrical system.
Thank you Peter Nitschke

Thanks Joshua & Dave , most of this weekend just gone were spent looking at the cooling system & passenger door.
Tonight i was looking at the drivers door , should be a few less rattles now hopefully.
I am waiting for a new coolant filler plug from a Toyota dealer but after talking to the previous owner (who is a work college) a new thermostat housing may be needed as a mechanic has probably cross threaded the old one.

I received a second hand set of rear shocks yesterday , when I went to fit them I discovered that the right one wasn't connected in the first place .
It seems to work ok now that it's plugged in.
The left wasn't too difficult to replace and the car seems to ride a little better now and there's a difference in the ride when the TEMS button is changed from normal to sport.
It still bump steers quit badly when the left rear goes over a sharp bump and the error message 73 comes up when Tc & E1 are bridged on DLC2 under suspension.
If it's the same as a uzz32 it's "Rear (RH) Vertical G sensor signal anomaly. mine is a uzz31 so not sure on that one.

Check the rear toe-in bolt. Mine got loose and caused the rear bump steer you mention. Had to replace it, cost a couple of dollars from memory, plus a wheel alignment.

I just grabbed the socket set and had a look , nothing obviously loose but a couple of the rubber bushes didn't look quite right.
Will have another look in the daylight.

Thanks Peter.

Arron, does the alignment look allright? No obvious toe in/out?

Also have a look at the front as well, as the weight shift from the rear going over a bump might be highlighting a front alignment issue. Having said that you should pick this up under braking if there is a front alignment issue.

The alignment looks ok but the bushes on the right lower front wishbone look flogged out.
Can anyone suggest where to get new stock suspension bushes from ?
I have tried ordering a new coolant filler plug from a local dealer in November last year and had to phone them today to chase it up , am waiting on a call from them to let me know what's happening.
I won't be ordering more parts from them if that's the norm for them.

I also picked up these today

They are actually round unlike the current wheels on the car.

I purchased Branz bushes for the LCAs on the road car. There was another guy making them, but I haven't heard from him in years. Both were OEM style rubber bushes. The alternative is polyurethane bushes for a stiffer ride, with the additional NVH (noise) that comes with them. I have them on the race car.

Depends what you want. Poly are cheaper.

Good question. He used to have a website: either Branz.com or soarerparts.com or something like that. I can't find it now.

You can replace the whole lower control arm from Toyota cheaply enough now, if you can find someone who can get them at trade price. I got a quote for them just last week - $264.85 NZ dollars per side (trade). Mine are still OK, but I decided at that price I'm going to replace them anyway. Uppers are only $158.50 NZD trade - again, mine are OK but after 18 years I'm going to do them because they are just so cheap.

Might be worth investigating as a better option than some unknown ebay bushes?

I would have done mine too if I could get arms for that much. I actually might even look into it, as I can't see myself selling the red car anytime soon.

Just to clear the record: "unknown" ebay bushes come in factory Toyota parts packaging. I think either Branz or Vlamos were contracted by Toyota to produce the bush as a Toyota replacement part. (I remember reading something quite a while ago, and may have the company wrong.) I would still be looking at the arms at that price though, as the ball joints are not replaceable.

Thanks Ben , Matthew & Allan , i am not sure where t would get the lower arms from , i tried buying a coolant filler plug from a local dealer and the order seemed to have been forgotten.
I also have a few other financial commitments at the moment and $500 or more for new arms will have to wait.

I managed to get the Auto Drive (cruse control) working , it turned out to be the wiring on the main control switch. A little solder and some new wire and it's all good.

The Soarer was up on axle stands today so I could get to the drain taps on the block to do the coolant for the last time (hopefully) and I noticed that the bracket that secures the sway bar on the drivers side front was broken.
A little work with the MIG and its fixed.

I did a little more work on the Soarer tonight , I fitted a new radiator
http://www.ebay.com/itm/200623239608?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I also bought a filter that goes in the radiator inlet from here
http://www.coolfilter.com.au/index.htm

With any luck that should fix the overheating problem this car has.
