Hi all,

Just picked up my Soarer today. It's a Blue '92 GTT-L and I payed a pretty decent price for it, I think. It's a replacement for my old daily which my girlfriend has permanently stolen for reasons that are beyond me, haha.

I'm generally a Nissan/Datsun man, but the last two cars I have bought are Toyotas, so maybe I'm coming over to the dark side?

Mods seem to be limited to a turbo timer and some aftermarket wheels so far.

Beyond that, it seems both window regulators are shot as the windows have simply fallen down. Also, it is running slightly rough from sitting for so long.

Plans, as it stands, are:
-Reset ECU and change spark plugs and oil; should hopefully cure the odd idle and increase performance
-Put in some nicer speakers, head unit, sub, etc from one of my other cars.
-Replace the actuators so the inside of my car doesn't get wet. It feels like this is the problem as the windows have just dropped.
-Get some nicer wheels, I'm thinking current model IS-F wheels, Eurolines or bronze CR Kais.

That's basically it.

It'll be joining my other cars that include a Liberty, an L28ET Patrol, a Datsun 280ZX and an MX62 Cressida Wagon when I take it home tonight.

My questions are:
-Does my plan of action re the slightly choppy idle and the dropping windows sound like a roughly correct diagnosis?
-And; do we still have a good deal running with CMI Toyota to get some OEM parts? I'd like to order an air filter, pink coolant, etc

Pictures will be up when I can wash it without wetting the inside..

Cheers gents (and ladies?)

Jamie. As far as I know CMI will still look after us, but it's been a while since I needed parts.

It's a bit unusual for both windows to be dropped, I suggest remove the door linings and inspect before ordering parts.

OK, so reporting back, the electrical issues were caused by two problems:
1. The passenger side regulator was completely shot, a replacement is on the way.
2. Also a few wires were disconnected and a fuse was blown on the driver's side fuse board.

So that has some of the issues fixed.

Next up is to finish the sound system install and correct the car's poor idle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but for the idle I am going to:
1. first clean out the ISCV with some WD40 once I pick up some Toyota coolant for a top up.
2. Inspect and replace the coil-packs if appropriate.
3. Inspect and replace the O2 sensor if appropriate.
4. General vacuum test.
5. And round the whole affair off with a full service, 0.76mm gaped iridium plugs, oil, inspection, etc

Pictures are to come when I've detailed the car and installed the exterior goodies I have for it.

Welcome and congrats on the purchase. I think CR-Kai's will look great on there but I may be biased.

You seem to have done your homework on the idle issues. Unfortunately, I've been through all of that with mine. ISCV is a common cause of erratic idle issues (high idle or stalling), and should be cleaned to prevent any build-up. Iridium plugs are the way to go, NGK BKR6EIX's are cheap and work well. Our aging coil packs are definitely the weak point of the ignition system. Other than any cracking, look for discoloration in the spark plug boots because this can also indicate issues. I told myself 'they're probably fine' for a year before I replaced mine and ended up with a much more responsive Soarer.

As far as cheap sources for OEM parts - amayama.com has saved me from dealing with dealers and is consistently well-priced. Rock auto in the US has Denso coils at about $70 each.

Be sure to share some pictures with us when you have the chance.

OK, I'm back. Work and study has been killing me at the moment and I've been thinking of selling the Soarer, but I've found enough time to bring the car up to scratch... nearly:

A few days after I picked up the car:

After some general maintenance and some tweaks:

It has been mostly cosmetic mods to date. I added the weathershields and the Vienna Dish IIs. The wheels were really nice, but I didn't like how the car felt with them on, so the decision has been made to move to 16-17 inch wheels, both for added performance and comfort.

Next on the list is a major suspension overhaul. I've already replaced a large part of the worn-out front end bushes with poly ones. I am waiting on a set of Supra Bilsteins, then the serious stuff starts. Tie rod ends, rear toe arms, completely re-bushed rear control arms, rack boots and bushings will be replaced. While everything is out, I figured I would replace the current struts and springs, despite the fact that the shock ones feel fine. Replacing them will be a Gixxer-Drew coil-over set-up, mostly because the Japanese coil-overs I have had in the past have had fairly poor ride quality and I haven't realised any performance gains for a street car.

With the Gixxer-Drew set-up, I will be experimenting with rebuilding the shocks at home (with the help of a bike shop), so I will report back if I have any luck re-building the shocks on the cheap.

Other than that, I need to do something about the head as the clearances sound way out. There are no dramatic performance or fuel economy losses, so it's not really urgent, but goddamn it, the tappet is so annoying!

I'm currently deciding between purchasing another Soarer with a re-built engine and then parting out the rest, or buying a the parts that need replacing and keeping my original engine block.

Once that it all sorted, it will be an exhaust, a bleed valve, an inter-cooler and boost 'til something breaks, haha.

I love this thing and my woman drove it around for a few weeks in the wet without crashing it, so it's here to stay. The theory is, I don't really trust a car until I've replaced nearly every mechanical component on it, so... here we go.

If anyone has any thoughts, let me know!
