Hi folks. I have been slack and decided to get around to introducing myself. I was offered a UZZ30 25 years ago and it would have been between 8 and 10K. Knocked it back because it was missing a couple of doors and had a young daughter. I still smack myself. Anyway, I lucked onto an SC400, badged Lexus 4.0 GT. It had all the "usual stuff" wrong. Broken plastic on doors (all reinforced and glued). Man, just look at that stuff sideways and it cracks. Front lower control arm ball joints stuffed (Riverina CV refurbished and apparently now, better than new and HEAPS cheaper than new. "knock-knock-knock" from front end, this was not rubbers, but was the tie rods themselves, but my tyre bloke sussed it almost immediately. I had never seen this mentioned on the forum and it may help someone. Really loose front end, so ALL rubbers replaced + front/rear anti-sway's, 4 shocks/boots, 2 tyres and front/rear alignment. It sailed through a roadworthy. My $600 rocket now owes me just over 3K and all the bits have been replaced. I reckon that I am way ahead. The bodywork is not that flash, but it just means that someone will be less likely to come along and do mischief. I have done the cruise fix, but there are still a couple of things that are bugging me.

1. I fill up with 98 and it takes about 100-120km before the gauge goes off full. I press the fuel button and it still says full until the gauge moves off full. I pulled out the sender and was very particular to cleanliness. Maybe not enough, as there was no change. Perhaps I need to re-visit this.
2. The car has just started to need 2-3 seconds cranking to cold start. Could this be an air/fuel sensor? When I first got it, it would start immediately, cold or warm. Now after a cold start, it idles like there is to much choke. Give it some revs and it then idles normally. It is not the battery, as I have already replaced it.
Any help/comments would be appreciated. I look forward to participating in the forum, as I have already taken a lot from it.

Hi Colin,
Welcome to the forum.
2 sounds like ecu or IACV have you had any of those looked at yet?

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the reply. No. I was just putting up with it for a while and mulling it over. I did think that the fuel gauge may be ECU though. What is IACV? It was my nephew, who's a mechanic, that thought that it may be an air intake sensor. Do you know if there is any easy way of checking it out, short of buying some maybe not needed spares? I reckon that I could do most things, but don't have any spares, unless I spec a fortune on them, then don't need them. Thanks

I have this issue of needing long cranking to start but mine idles fine. Uses to start very easily. Now takes 3 or 4 seconds of cranking to turn over.

Yes my 32 is the same. It virtually starts as I turn the key back off to try again. Then runs rough for a couple seconds. Not an ecu problem as I have tried many in it, all the same. Possibly related to worn ignition switch?
I will have to study the circuitry to gain insight now I know it is not uncommon.
Has anyone else had experience with this problem?
The initial rough running could be injectors?

Mine doesn't run rough at all but regardless of the weather takes a lot to turn over. Definitely excessive for a 1uz. It also has a funny whiring noise until it warms up. It speeds up with the rpm even if in neutral. Thinking might be idle pulley.

Mine was as good as gold and it was if someone had thrown a switch when it went from good to not so good. After it changed, it did not get any worse, stayed the same. The choking thing doesn't happen all the time though. Is there such a thing as Japanese Pixies? Not sure about the ignition switch though. I would have thought that dicky switch cold, dicky switch warm...

Colin, IACV = Idle Air Control Valve. The bearings can get sticky and some people have cleaned them, but they are easy and cheap to replace.

Colin, What the above tute doesn't say is to check the motor fields for continuity & test the motor when reassembled for correct operation. The procedure is detailed in the soarer bible.
