Hey guys, I bought another Soarer in November 2017. I sold my old v8 as I needed an extra few dollars for my home deposit. Unfortunate, but now at least I own my house. The new rocket is a manual swapped 98 JZZ30, although it was far from a rocket when I bought it as it was leaking so much oil I couldn’t tell where it was coming from, it had terrible piston slap on cold start, it couldn’t boost due to an electrical issue causing a misfire and worst of all the interior was a mix of factory black and vinyl dyed parts.

Unlike the rest of the internet, rather than being salty about my poor purchase and naming and shaming the seller, I took responsibility for buying a 2nd hand modified car, parked it in my shed for months, hemmorhaging oil onto some cardboard while I rounded up the parts to fix it.

I bought a complete factory black interior from Baldwin imports. Josh personally delivered from Newcastle to my door in Brisbane. Can’t speak highly enough of his service. Once I’d swapped in the new interior I decided it was time to start thinking about the mechanical side.

I purchased an 81000k engine from a wrecker in Brisbane. It came from a Crown so there was quite a few things that needed swapping over including the sump, intake manifold and wiring loom. I stripped the whole loom down and between the two made one complete one. There were so many poor solder joints and burnt wires that I’m surprised the thing never lit on fire.

While I had the engine out I degreased the underside of the car front to back. Also, when I bought the car it came with a 5 puck button clutch which was a pig to drive on the street. It was swapped out for an NPC cushioned button clutch rated for 330rwkw and billet alloy flywheel. I can’t speak highly enough of the product, it drives like OEM but you can feel the much higher clamping force under load.

The entire clutch system has been replaced with new OEM master and slave cylinders and a HEL braided clutch line. A number of other parts have been installed during this process including a Fenix alloy radiator, clutch master cylinder heat shield, Work D9R wheels and an Alpine head unit.

There’s still a lot of things that need to be done, but finally the car is in a useable state! Next on the agenda is to build the gearbox to improve shifting and allow it to hold more power. Followed by upgrading the high flow turbo to a Garrett 3576 and 6boost manifold. Haltech have just released JZZ30 plug and play ecus too, which is definitely on the cards.

I’ll resize and post a few pictures of the beast, I look forward to updating you in the future!

The new clutch compared to the old, the great moment of removing the leaky piece of poo, one of the broken coil pack connectors and the new head unit.

Thanks for the kind words! Engine removal is about as easy as it gets, if you’ve pulled an engine before, imagine that but easier and that’s what to expect from a JZZ30. Mine had quite a few rounded bolts, if you don’t have a set of twist sockets they can definitely make your life easier. Other than that it’s really quite simple. If you need some advice or assistance, I’m in Brisbane and happy to help

Nice work.. looks like a good soarer build going forward.

That's probably what i need to do to mine, pull the engine out, give it a refresh, go over all the electrical wiring..

Did the Apexi Power FC work ?

Hey Justin, Power FC seems to work ok. It was in the car when I bought it and I’ve got a dyno sheet of it making 295kw at 20psi. I’ll still be putting in a Haltech stand alone ecu when I upgrade turbo and injectors etc. just feel like 20 years newer technology is going to be far better.

Was that dodgy wiring to your coil pack clips or did you find wiring issues all over ?

I'm currently throwing the idea around of pulling the engine out of my jz, going over the wiring, replacing turbo, giving it a refresh etc as it has its days, has some crazy squeaks and rattles and is generally driving me nuts..

the white cars should have come with the black interior from factory. Simple as that, Toyota. Great perseverance, mate. A lot of work.

Feel free to ask anything about the standalone, I have a map and ECU I/O report to get you started with the haltech if you want.

I was pretty happy with my PowerFC, but then it started having issues and I am doing way more now with the Haltech than the PowerFC could.

At that power level, boost per gear and slip based traction control are great to have :-)

I think red and black cars look great with black interiors. White looks sick with two tone interior!

Thanks again for the appreciation. And thanks Tai, would definitely appreciate a base map when I upgrade ecu! The whole loom had many wiring issues. Mostly from burnt and fatigued wires, but some were just very bad solder joins and broken connectors. Here's a few pictures of it, I didn't document it all as there were just too many things that needed repair.

Just an FYI for anybody intending to install a double din head unit. We all know the Soarer is more like 2.5 din and looks like crap without filling the remaining gap.

I bought the kit shown from eBay. I knew full well it was for an SC300, so there was a clash with the hazard light switch and radio/temp controls. A lot of plastic has to be cut out to allow it to fit, but overall it finishes it off fairly well.
I'll have to paint it to match the gloss finish on the rest of the parts, or preferably replace them for the factory finish.

I paid $3k. It seems a lot, but with proven 80,000km it was by far the best available.

I’m driving around the South Island of NZ at the moment. If there ever were some roads I’d love to drive the Soarer on it’s here! I’m waiting to see one, travelling from Mount Cook to Dunedin tomorrow, hopefully see one then rather than just campervans.

Just seen this thread. Good work on saving one. It's alot of work you've done to it. Haltech is the way to go if you want to get rid of the Power FC. Black interior looks good too!

Sorry for the late reply Blake, I didn't get to the North island unfortunately. Next time I'm over there I'll be checking it out for sure.

Thanks James, I'll definitely do a Haltech eventually. I've bought a Supra rolling shell that needs a lot of love and a 2j, so for the moment I'm just enjoying the Soarer.

A few pictures now - MCA street essential coilovers have been installed and the ride height is great and the comfort is very acceptable. A comparison of how it used to sit to how it is now.

Small update with the car. I've bought myself a S2 Supra JDM carbon fibre steering wheel. This thing was not cheap, but in my opinion is a much needed upgrade for the OEM wheel. Other than that, I've bought a Supra rolling shell. This is the new project and the Soarer will be enjoyed as is (for now)

Love the steering wheel. Same as mine, perforated leather and red stitching, minus the carbon fibre. I always have wanted one, only thing putting me off was that I wasn't sure how it'd go with the woodgrain interior. Looks great

The stock wheel really isn't that great. It's on my Supra at the moment just to roll it around if I need to. This is a higher quality pic of it, it's in perfect condition.

I have also installed centre caps for the wheels, just finishes it all off nicely. I'm noticing a lot of heat through the tunnel, so adding some insulation will be the next job on the list.
