Power windows, mirrors, and courtesy lights on the door panel fail to operate.
Gary Furman

After receiving excellent help from the Soarer Central Web site I would like to submit the following information when your power windows, door lock, mirrors, and courtesy lights in the doors fail to operate.

Simple test - Fuses and Relays.

  1. Check the fuses in the kick panel fuse box (one 15A IGN, one 30A Door and one 30A Power).
    • If either fuse(s) is blown replace the fuse and see if the above items work.
      • i. If they work replace the fuse box cover.
  2. Check the Relays.
    • If they still do not work, remove the black relay above the fuse box and swap it with one of the black relays in the fuse box on the left hand side of the engine under the bonnet.
      • If the above items work get a replacement relay.

If the problem still exists, you need to access the wiring loom.

1. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!

2. With the drivers side car door open remove the three screws that hold the trim panel under the dash panel and remove the trim panel (just in front of drivers knees).

3. Gently pull on the top of the trim strip between the rubber door molding and the carpet. Completely remove the strip and place it out of your way.

4. The carpet has plastic strips that clip into metal brackets attached to the door sill.

5. Gently pull the plastic strip out of the clips and lift the carpet away. You can wedge the carpet under the gas pedal to keep it out of your way.
Note: Folding the carpet over may cause some cracking in the foam backing it is molded to, but it will all go back together just fine.

6. You can now gain access to the wire harness where it plugs in to the fuse box.
Identify the driver’s door wire harness by wiggling the wire harness between the door and body.
Note: Depending on your cars accessories you may have additional connectors! My car is a 4.0 GT and I only had the two connectors.
Remove the blue and white connectors (Green Arrows) from the fuse box assembly.

7. You should now be able to feed the wire harness and connectors through the hole in the car body (Green Arrow).

8. Optional: You may not have to disassemble the door, but in my case I wanted to have plenty of room to inspect the wire harness once I opened it up.
  • Remove the door panel and remove the speaker box in the door.
  • Feed the wire harness through the opening in the car door.

9. After opening the wire harness I found the white with black stripe wire broken in two just past the accordion section of the rubber covering (Green Arrow).

Upload

10. Inspect the rest of the wires in the section you have unwrapped to see if any of them show signs of breakage (in my situation none of them did).
Note: If your wires are not damaged then your problem cannot be remedied with this procedure.

11. The following picture is what I would call a standard automotive wire repair. I may have added too much splice wire, but my thoughts were: By having a little extra wire and loosely wrapping the harness back up with electrical tape the wires could settle/work back in to their natural position.

12. After repair, feed the wire harness back through the openings in the door and car body.

13. Replace everything you removed and reconnect the battery.

14. With the Ignition key turned to the run position your windows, door locks, mirrors, and courtesy lights should now work.

Note: If a broken wire is found and repaired and your windows still do not work, you may have one or more other components like the switch assembly, power controller, or the door closed switch (to name a few) defective.
