Ok, will have steel wheels put in shortly, so I can boost it up freely now. Anyway, been looking at getting a boost controller now. Don't want to spend 700 bux on one, and don't really care about the flashy graphic ones (unless someone has one at the right price). What do you guys reckon about this one:

Look with boost controllers you have to sum up what you need. If you just want a few extra psi for daily driving a simple bleed valve etc will do. If you want to get fancy and have an electronic unit with two different levels of boost the Jay-car units are cheap and extremely well designed. Having said that unlike their more expensive rivals they do not give you any feedback. Most people own the flashy units and never use half of its capabilities because they simply don't know what they're looking at. Don't buy brand names just because it's a brand name buy it because it has capabilities that you need. Can't vouch for that one off e-bay though I'm afraid, never seen one in use
Ok, all I need it for is to raise the stock boost to 16psi or thereabouts, I don't have the boost cut defender thingy but I do have an SAFC II which lifts the boost cut a litle bit, so yeah, wherever it gets lifted up to without the boost cut. Is there any benefit at all in having the feature to switch between stock boost and higher boost? Or is it something like if say you give your car to your younger brother and you don't want him to have more power etc?
Yeah I looked at the jaycar one just then, for almost the same price I can get a bleed valve thingy or something. Anyone got a cheap second hand electronic one perhaps (like $300 one or something?) I'm not really keen on spending close to $700 on one

Yeah but the jay-car one is an electronic boost controller with the ability to switch between two boost settings and alter those boost settings whenever you like. Costs you $170 total for the hand controller, unit and cable. Oh and 16psi is a fair bit of boost for the stock turbo's, I know people on here run it however I probably wouldn't, maybe even look towards a cheap front mount intercooler kit for a few extra psi.
Oh ok... Hmmm, so since the Jaycar one is an electronic one, it is more accurate than the bleed valve obviously right? Anyone tried it before? How good is it? Will it show how much boost I'm running at the time?
I've given it some thought, and I guess I wouldn't bother with the fancy ones hey. So either the Jaycar one if it is any good, or a simple bleed valve and a boost gauge.

That ebay one doesn't look like an electronic controller to me. It looks like a bleed valve with a solenoid to switch to high boost.
I am in the same predicament at the moment.
I had one of those el cheapo $25 ebay ones. Spiked like I was thinking of the gizzmo ibc. Seems like a good unit, better than the hybrid, does most of the things the big brand name ones do.
I don't really care for fancy settings. I just want it to hold steady boost and have 2 settings.
Adam, the boost cut prevents damage to the turbos by cutting ignition, otherwise your ceramic turbine wheels would brake off after a while. Boost cut is a safety feature. I wouldn't be boosting ceramics up to 15 psi often though, they won't last long. Get steel wheel turbos if you want to run higher boost.

Daniel I have been using an ebay boost controller that cost me $30 for over a year now, i have been running 14psi and has never spiked or caused any problems, I'm 100% happy with it.

thanks dan im not running alot of boost only 13 psi. i think its the rush of air or vacuum cause im traveling at 100 kmh. thats the only time it does that. was just asking if it damages thats all. does anyone know where the co2 sensor is located ?
Thanks Luis! I've had a quick look at it and it looks quite good actually! Is it true that the boost comes on quicker though? I've read the link to SAU and they say that apparently it does... can you confirm from your own experience?

I have soldered up a few of those jaycar ones now. They are currently in use on a 2 180's, a WRX and a S4 RX7, haven't heard any complaints yet. As for the display, it would be much easier just to install a boost gauge (like you haven't got one already!) and look at that.
I'm all for their stuff (not just coz I get trade discount ), but Mark swears by them, and last I heard Neil thought they were alright too. Where else could you get a digital boost controller with two settings and a LOT more adjustment points than the apexi and the hks ones put together for under $200? I will be running one of these, and their version of the afc once my interior is back together.
BTW, as I have a little less on my plate than Mark does at the moment, if you'd like one but don't trust your soldering skills, I will solder them up for anyone that would like me to at a good rate!

I bought a Blitz Dual SBC spec S electronic boost controller with 4 boost settings, variable gain (to set how hard it hits boost) etc for $250 a few weeks ago 2ndhand but unused.

Daniel: I used the turbotech. I set it for 17psi on the dyno and when I got to Willowbank on a 30+ degree day it spiked to 22psi.
14psi saw a spike to 17psi?
Certainly didn't seem to bring boost on any quicker for me. I think it may have contributed to boost creep actually. The car would make 1psi then 5psi and stay on 5psi for a sec and then get to full boost.
Ben: May be interested in one I was looking at the gizmmos. Do the jaycar ones tell you the boost level like the gizzmo? I have a boost guage but only reads to 20psi.

Ben, how did the LCD job go?
Desoldering the lcd was a piece of piss. The issue is that Mark was unaware that I had a '91. Apparantly the 91-93 can't use the climate module from any other year, otherwise you lose control of the fan speed. I'm in the middle of doing a cut and shut job so I can use the parts of both, and still maintain full controll of everything.

I don't know, I've never installed them, only built them so I don't know whether or not that they give a real time read out. If I can find the instrusctions for one later I'll let you know.
