Sometimes if you've got a small leak it'll only start spewing out your coolant under high pressure/temperature so after a long or hard drive. When coolant dries it dries white so track back the splatter pattern to the leak. If it's a big one replace your radiator or come see me coz I have a spare If it's a small leak go get some metal putty and patch it up. Oh and like Rob said go buy yourself some coolant either way because water has no inhibitors in it so it will not keep your system very cool!

So, experimentally punctuating your torrents of spring, you are telling us that it overheated without water and did not when water was added. So far, sounds about right, although Rob's advice to use coolant (Toyota Red) will improve the shining hour.

You might find that it's a slow leak. Either way, I would say you have been given a chance to find and fix it before you do some serious damage. Take the chance!

check that your clutch fan is ok i.e play... 2nd check your hoses for leaks, look at your heater hoses, final is to check that your thermostat and radiator are o.k, if it all looks good, remove your radiator and reverse flush it.

Why would you want to? You might hide the problem for a while, but unless you find out where the leak really is, it will bite you big time eventually.

Trent, You can physically run no thermostat in your car. The reason thermostats are used is to: 1. allow the engine to reach "correct operating temperature" quickly from cold, and 2. once reached maintain correct operating temperature. Point 1 greatly increases the life of the engine and associated components especially where different materials are used(ie alloy head, cast iron block). Point 2 is achieved by regulating coolant flow through the radiator as required (ie engine below correct op temp- thermostat will close partially/fully)

And point 3: It's not some old POS Holden that you can do stuff like that with It is a refined engine of the highest quality, and as such, ALL intergrated parts are neccesary.........so there, I said so!

Using that logic then we should all have totally stock, genuine, Soarers. What a dreary site this would be then.

Guys, along the same lines last week my TT overheated on the way to work. When I stopped and lifted the bonnet there was a lot of radiator and overflow gurgling and a little coolant expelled. I parked it and left and later had it checked out, but couldn't find anything - it behaved perfectly. We decided that the thermostat must be playing up so replaced it. It was well behaved for the next few days then overheated again (why does it always happen on the way to work in the morning?). A lot of radiator gurgling but no coolant came out this time. I lifted the bonnet and let it cool for 15 minutes and then it was fine again to get to work. Its now parked until I can work out what is causing the intermittent overheating. I had the top tank replaced last year so I doubt its the radiator. Please tell me its not the waterpump.

Mate has to be either water pump, a blockage in the radiator, or a blockage in your engine cooling system.

Guys; If you have the incorrect coolant in there And also a small blockage there will be dramas. have a look at the thickness of the radiator (made for Japanese climate) then the TT guys go a shove an intercooler in front of it . then have the cooling fan hub isn't working to well so what do we have?????? a lot of soarers boiling over. If any body has a boiling over soarer Be it V8 or TT go and get your radiator cleaned out. that is the first thing to do. if you really cook these cars it will stuff the head (or heads) don't forget the heads are alloy and it doesn't take much to stuff them. 2 cents guys. good luck

Guys, the intermittent overheating is still there. I have since had the hoses off and checked for any blockage but nothing turned up. Then a dyno guy ran it for a while on the dyno checking regularly to see if it was overheating so he could try to work out the cause. Naturally, it quickly went up to half way on the temp gauge and stayed there and didn't go any higher. Two days later it suddenly overheated on the way to work I don't really want to put in a new water pump (TT) and find that it was something else, but I don't want to cook the engine either. Is there a viscous coupling on the fan that may be the problem?
