I just bought my soarer and want to do a basic service on it, does anyone have the total volume for the cooling system/radiator... so i can mix up the right amounts of coolant:water ?
Thanks

The four litre pack of red stuff from Toyota dealers is enough.
Same price as the wrong stuff too.

Get the concentrate, toss it in, then top up with distilled/demineralised water.

The US manual quotes coolant capacity as:
V8 (SC400) 10.8 litres.
SC300 Auto - 8.4 litres.
SC300 Manual - 8.5 litres.

I doubt the TT would be much less than that if at all, possibly somewhere in between.

However most people don't get the coolant fully drained, so while it might only take 6 litres, there would still be a couple of litres of old stuff lying in the bottom of the block.

This highlights the importance of flushing it really well, then allowing for the water still in the block when adding new coolant. It is also why I suggest to use the concentrate, not the premix.

Even in the best case above, if the capacity is 8.4 litres and it only takes 6 litres to fill it up, there is 2.4 litres of water already there which will dilute premix further to less than 2/3 of it's original strength.

However if you put in 4.2 litres of concentrate for the TT (5.4 for the V8) then top it up with demineralised water, the total dilution will be 50% which is the recommended strength.

Where do you get the red coolant from, Toyota dealers only? I will have to flush mine once the turbos are back in...

thanks heaps peter! i did as you said and found it took about 3litres of coolant and only another half to three quarters litre of demineralised water taking into account the remaining water in the bottom. it sucks cause it still didn't fix the problem with overheating...the reason for the flush but at least i know now.

Sean, the radiators are huge and should cool the engine comfortably with anything that is wet.

The reason for proper coolant is to protect the engine against rust, lubricate the water pump, not attack the seals etc.

If things were so marginal that a change of fluid helped, then there would still be a problem waiting to happen - just delayed by a little bit.
