I bought my soarer only three days ago. Drove it from melb to hobart. About two hours into driving down from the ferry the car after going uphill under some fair load...overheated...it was a 30Deg day. However two days later after heading up some hills again it overheated and began to creep up again and again going uphill so i just went home and kept to the flats....
WHY? The water pump etc has been replaced but that was 45 000ks ago...could it have gone? I noticed that upon topping up the radiator it didn't seem to be flowing water like i would expect it to. The pipes had quite a fair bit of gunk in them i flushed them out today but still no luck the temp started climbing again....
The top radiator hose to the water pump also doesn't have alot of pressure in it if any, it can be pinched closed with no effort or resistance....this doesn't seem right....should i just carefully take it in to my local toyota service center and have them check it out? Could the thermostat have rusted away? It had been sitting around for 8months without being driven?
Any help regarding this would be great. I loved the car when it went, it was so sweet and i am not happy as i am sure you know to be sidelined like this....thanks....

No, its not right. But don't take it to toyota, they don't know enough about the soarer. Take it to a radiator specialist so they car pressurise the system and check for any possible leaks, as it sounds like you have some.

Check your radiator cap, could be something as simple as that. I could pinch my top radiator hose, but after I bought a new cap it was rock hard when the car was at full operating temperature.
May also be a thermostat or clogged radiator, but start with the cap, it is cheap :-)

I went to the radiator guys, they said it more than likely is a clogged/blocked radiator because of the overheating up hill under load. So they are going to do a full clean and flush and replace the top of the radiator and its all pretty reasonable. They don't have soarer radiator tops but its the same as a Supra 3L 755mm long by 48mm wide and 34mm cap top thats from ADRA too...if anyone else needs to know....this is for the 91 1JZ-GTE
So fingers crossed that is all that it needs. Thankyou guys heaps for the advice and i will replace the radiator cap as well just to be on the safe side, i nice Trust/GReddy one will do:-)

common problem change your radiator cap first,
check your rear heater hoses located on the passenger side firewall to motor.

Thermostat is accessed from under the car and you have to take the alternator off too, or have triple jointed wrists! And yes, a radiator place can do that for you.

Sean, you can order a thermostat for the 1J from Castle Hill Toyota in NSW. They do delivery so shouldn't be a problem to get it down to Tasmania.

As for the thermostat, you could go for a simple standard Toyota thermostat OR go for a TRD one. The TRD thermostat will give you some extra power, but uses more fuel on the downside. Unfortunately, the price is something like $130. I wouldn't purchase it at that price though, but you (and others) might.
