Pulled the coil packs out today and 5 have cracks. Not on the stems but under the rubbers and all the cracks are on the inside of each coil pack of each rail if you know what i mean.

What could be the cause of this?

Also the two middle plugs had a fair bit of oil covering them too(not submerged). Have tightened the rocker cover so see how that goes.

The plugs i pulled out, all on outer core a little black but each probe was slightly brown.

Id post a pic if i could get the pics on the PC.

Any help as to what could be causing this would be great...

age.... age... and again age. Just be greatful there still going cause on many vehicles you'd be on your third set by now.

The oil is from leaking rocker cover gasket, due to the screws always coming loose, again very common and cheap to fix.

Ok Sounds about right to me.

Is it worth going to a wreckers and picking up some second hand coil packs or save some funds and go some new ones?

How much are second hand coil packs worth?
Anyone from South Eastern Suburbs know a cheap place?

Also is there a way or a good product to better seal the rocker cover on our cars? I know the screws i have to tighten every so often but after a more long term fix.

Thanks for your reply Ben...

2nd hand are worth around $25 to $50 each.

If your car is not missing yet, i would save up some money and buy a new set of 6 from America

(someone bought a set of 6 delivered to Australia for around $600 and something, Actually wasnt it you Ben who bought them?)

As Ben said they crack because of the age and heat, so buying 2nd hand wont last long. But if you buy brand new they will last another 10+ yrs.

Alternatively you can use Bosch coils (around $50 each) and some leads.

Sorta off topic and sorry Micheal. But im curious Danny or anyone that knows.

If you were to buy the Bosch Coil do they work better than the Standard coil packs?

Basically what im getting at is down the track i wanna buy new coil packs myself and a HKS DLI System. Is that better than the bosch coils, or is the bosch coils better?

I thought you needed aftermarket ecu to run bosch coils? The weak point but in the system is the ignitor for actual spark energy and to replace that you most diffinately need an aftermarket ecu, or you add a HKS type DLI.

Other than being slightly cheaper, what other advantage is the bosch coils? You need to run leads which is very yuk for ignition noise. How long do these last? As long as factory coils?

there is nothing made here in Australia that is any thing like the standard coils
the primery and secondard windings of the coils are totaly different.
i have actually rang bosch Australia and asked the questions
the closest thing to them is the MSD from america
but thay are really big suckers and would take up at least 1/4 of the engine bay to mount them
Craig webber had contacted a guy in America that would be able to get original coils but you would only save about $15 from buying new here in Australia.

who did he contact? Have you tried elmhurst toyota for factory coils, they are cheaper than any australian toyota dealer, and they get it here quicker than australian toyota dealers.

www.elmhursttoyota.com

Goto toyota and parts section and send in a request for parts price. They give price and do everything else for you when you order it.

I have a aftermarket ECU.

Thanks for the input Ben and Lew.

Looks like new standard coil packs and HKS DLI system will be in the future plans.

Yeah, i was emailing them a while back about a new set of coil packs, including shipping it was going to cost ~$96 per coil pack, just over half the price of some over here.
I think its worth it if you need a whole knew set.

here is my email:
>Hi,
>
>The 2jgte coils are 90919-02205 list 90.00 cost 66.00 ea + 42.50 shipping.

That's what I paid, but I also got the six brand new coilpack connectors (highly recommend) as well which ended up being a grand total of 633 AUS delivered.

Cool thanks for the info guys!

Hey Michael, regarding your email above...

You mention 2jgte coil packs. Whats the difference between the 2jgte and 1JZ coil packs?

Im assuming 2jgte better? Same fit as the standard packs?

There the same. Both engines use the same part number for coils.

Have you tried Araldite and Heat shrink Michael?

Havent tried the heat shrink yet.

So far all i have tried is sealing the cracks off with silicone.
Been pretty successful.

Dont know how much arching its stopping but have regained very much response and power. Feels pretty much like when i first got the car

Not sure how long this may last though with the heat but previously sealing cracks around the top mounting corners of the packs is looking good. No silicone has come off or showing any signs of heat damage.

This would have been about 4 - 5 months ago...

Im sure it would be hotter at the base of the stems rather then the top of the packs though.

Thought i had a major problem till i patched the buggers up LOL

All Good for now!
