Hey guys, I am keeping my eyes open for some 2nd hand single turbo kits, and I have stumbled across an HKS T04R kit. I am just wondering if any one knows what kind of response one can expect on a 1JZGTE?
I understand this is not the newest type of turbo around!

Cheers,

Haha been looking on ImportBitz?

I think their plan bearing and have a rather large exhaust housing. Though perhaps rated around the 600hp mark?

It would hit boost around 3000rpm i presume? and haul ass all the way to redline after that...

Plain bearing? Probably start boosting at 2800-3200 and have full boost by 4200 or so i would guess.

The T04R is rated for 700hp. Full boost will be seen at yeah.. about 4200rpm and it is a roller bearing turbo. A very popular turbo choice in the USA with the Supra owners.

Nah I think 4800 is more realistic as I had one on my 1JZ before.

i had one on my car for a year and ran 10.78 with it.

i had a 3400 stall, it started seeing boost at 3100, and had full boost late in the 4600 region.

i liked it, mine was a gcg dual ball bearing with a 1.00 rear housing and p trim exhaust wheel.

Shane what tyres are you running for your 10 second passes? Also what sort of launch rpm do you stall to before letting it rip?

MT drag radials 255/50/16

will have my new engine in shortly and the goal is a 9.7 at 145 mph on these tyres, i reckon it will go faster with more development, but i think a 9.7 is acheivable within a year

you will kill an auto within 3 laps i rekon. the stall convertor will heat the box up within half a lap.

hell, mine goes from under the minimum on the guage to 210F within 400 metres with 2 big tranny coolers.

Convert to manual if you want to do circuit work.

Not really a path I would like to go down.
I am quite determined to stick with the automatic.

so yeah, would an HKS GT30307 or a Garrett GT3040 be better suited for track work?

Something like what I got is better suited for track work. GT3076R, but you'd still want a manual.

There is a guy on performance forums with a 2jz supra running something like a T04Z and he even says on queensland raceway, he is not seeing the full benefits of this turbo, just too laggy for circuit work, so a 700hp on a 1jz is going to be pretty similar. A more responsive turbo is going to work a lot better unless you do the whole foot on brake/throttle thing like senna use to do in the turbo F1 years. If you do that with an auto, you'll cook it.

Cheers mate!

I've posted the response of this turbo before. Even posted a graph showing the boost vs rpm. Basically I'm getting
5psi@2900rpm under load. Another guy on toymods installed the same turbo on his 1jz and is getting 5psi@3000rpm, so expect response around this mark.

I've also posted the cost which worked out to be approximately $5700 for all single turbo related parts and labour (pretty much all new parts), and i've had zero problems with it in now 10-11 months of use including 2 outings to WSID with a thrid happening tonight, and a trip to QLD and back :-)

I'll send you more details maybe tonight if I have time on the setup itself.

Hey Hey, off to WSID again. Good stuff :-) I am going to WB on saturday to test new turbo setup.

The HKS T04R is very similar to the turbo I was using Ta45s. It has a slightly larger compressor wheel but similar exhaust and housing.

My car is not a good example because boost threshold is affected by the amount of load on the engine and as my car is lighter and has very short gearing it probably wouldn't really do anything similar in a jzz30.

I had 1psi at 3200rpm and full boost at 5700rpm in 1st gear. Full boost is achieved at lower rpms in higher gears. Either way, not a good turbo for a track car.

My new turbo would be pretty good. Hypergear TR44. Basically the same as ben's but non BB. Very cheap also. As I said, going to the track this weekend to see how it goes. I now get 2psi at 3000rpm and 14psi at 5000rpm odd. If you can afford it, the garrett would be better though :-)

I've just been doing some reading, especially on your setup Ben.
It seems that the GT30R is the way to go.
Now, I have seen a few of these go for under $2000 in an internally gated version.
Is there any reason an internal gate would be unsuitable for 300rwkw?

Just depends on if the actual gate is larger enough to flow the air. This is more difficult at low boost levels because it has to divert more air away from the turbine wheel.

I do think 300rwkw through an auto with a GT3076R is pushing it. Could be done possibly but it would need cams and a fair whack of boost.
