Ok I've done a bit of searching, but still haven't been able to find what I'm after, or maybe I'm too drunk/tired who knows

Basically I need a good catalytic converter. I've just had Lew's dumps installed and have his mid pipe as well. Now the stock cat doesn't fit on the midpipe coz it's too small, and I wouldn't like to keep it anyway as it is probably the most restrictive part of the exhaust now.

I've read in some posts that some aftermarket hi flow cats are not that good, so just want your recommendation as to which cat I should buy if you know of good one or two. Cheers people!!!

So metalcat is the consensus for the Cat replacement ? Do you guys know top of you head what is the diameter of the stock piping ? I mean do I need a 2.5 or a 3" cat ? ( for stock TT I mean)

cheers

And for stock exhaust I need ?

Thanks.

Hold on, what is the reasoning that the stock system cannot take advantage of a higher flowing cat ? Higher flow = faster gas = more psi on the other side as the wheels spin quicker, I am right?

It won't blow my socks of , but car is good as is... I just need a cat damnit, and not a live one , I already got one of those to kick.

Coz the rest of the stock system is more restrictive than the stock cat, or whatever the compliance fools put on. Stock zorst is really the soarers downfall!

I don't put second hand on my car, never ever. On any of my cars :-)

OK; so if I want to get rid of the most restrictive part from exhaust as well, what is it; what is a "zorst" ?

And sice we're here, is there an exhaust shop in Melbourne you guys recommend to go and change the "zorst" and cat ? I might keep this car a couple more years, so I might as well think of some upgrades.

thanks

Put it this way stock everything stock is restrictive (in most cases).

Get the whole exhaust replace at once and enjoy the psi rise. You will not look back.

One of the most value for money mod you can do to your soarer.

Thanks Aka; any issues with fuel cut and such from such a mod , will it boost too high ?

I am running 12 psi now stock; we had a debate a while back . Don't know why, but mine is running 12 psi instead of the stock 9-91/2. It has a stock ECU with no boost controller...

Your dumps will be the most restrictive piece of your stock exhaust at the moment. Give Lew a call and get his dumps.

Exhaust is just a pipe though... who cares if second hand or not.

Mate I didnt have a boost gauge before i installed my exhaust. But like you said most stock soarers boost 9-10 psi stock.

My question to you is your boost gauge accurate? I mean for a stock soarer to boost 12psi seems odd.

As for boost cut I wouldnt worry about it. From what i have read it cuts in around 14.7psi (give or take).

My car currently boosts at 12psi after just getting the exhaust and a pod. i am taking ti to the drags tomorrow night will let you know how I go with just those mods.

Also check out Jeff Smiths profile. He has a LOT of mods and his natural boost is 13psi.

I know, people got ticked off when I said it before. I checked the boost gauge versus a calibrated industrial gauge, and it holds true ( it did differ within 1 psi , but that was up in the 25+ psi range , at 12 psi was out less than .5psi, more like half a line and that means .25 ).

It goes like this:
Driving normally with just short bursts of acceleration with pedal to the metal it goes up to 10 psi. If I keep it there, especially in higher gears like 3rd or 4th, it does creep up to 12-12.5 depending on outside air temperature. Now in hot summer I don't get more than 11.5-12, in winter was about 12.5 .

Problem is it is hard to prove it , by the time I hit 12 psi I am way , WAY past the 80 legal limit :-)

OK ;I made up my mind, I will install Jeff's dumps and put it in once and good.

Would dumps & cat change the noise, do I also need to change the mufflers ? I.e. are mufflers really restrictive or one could leave them on with just dumps , 3" down to cat and new high flow cat ?

Many thanks

That's what I'm doing, my whole exhaust will be changed apart from the rear mufflers and the pipes to the cat... will let you know in a month when I get my car tuned how it goes. I just don't want a noisy car that's all...

EDIT: Oh, you'll also need a new 3" midpipe between the cat and dumps :-)

I still my stock exhaust sitting at home and from the looks of them BLOODY hell they are Restrictive.

As for doing the dumps it will make the turbos spool up quicker.

Do the whole exhaust in once hit. Enjoy the full power of 1JZ.

Marius, that's what peak recall is for (if your boost gauge has it of course).

My winter peak is about 11.5 psi

Hot summer day only manages about 9-10 psi (fluctuates).

The only mod is a BFI
