My "oil pressure warning" returned after a few weeks; it only happens when I start the engine hot after it's been sitting for a couple of hours or less. Never on cold start, never during driving.

What is the consensus here ( if any ) , faulty sensor, crappy oil filter or oil pump on the way out( god forbid ).

Oil is fresh, and it happened with old oil/fresh oil,no difference. And I think that the oil I throw out ( MObil1 10w-30 )is just as good as the one I put in, or almost ; after 5000 kays.

Thanks !

maybe a slightly thicker oil might help.
I thought oil was thinner after heating up thus you might not have as much pressure on startup.
For the record i use Mobil1 5w-50 (I would use this in my 18rg Celica if i could be bothered spending that price on oil for it....which I am not, so I don't)
I have never had a problem with it.
from memory the first value in the number signifies the speed at which the oil can get tot he components on startup and the second value is the thckness while using it, so if you got something that was quicker moving on start up (5w or 0w) and slightly thicker (40 or 50) then it might go away.
I used to use shell ultra but it didn't sound as smooth (can't remember the rating on it sorry).

I used 5w-50 before and it didn't feel too good unfortunately; it had a knock at hot .. It was too thick when hot ( the 50 part ) . The clearances of the engine have been designed to run on 10w-30 or so in 0-40 degrees temperature outside or so the diagram says.

I've been using this oil for over a year with no problems; I might try a thicker one and that could be a good argument as we had a pretty hot summer this year in Melbourne...

I've always used Mobil 1 10w-30 and have never had a problem with it but I got a friend of a friend who owns WTF Auto here in perth to service my car and he changed the oil... I dunno what to but my mate reckons the car runs noticably better. Will post up on here what it is when I find out.

I use Castrol Magnatech 10W-40. I use it in everything. Works great.

Although on some hot days the car will sometimes give me that ding when starting up. I just keep an eye on the oil level and dont worry about it too much.

When did you last change the filter? If it only happens when you start it then it may be that the anti-drain-back valve is stuffed and your filter is draining back into the sump. Just my opinion. I would imagine that you would still have a problem when it is cold though if that was the case.

Marius my argument for the thicker oil was that the car was 15 years old and the tolerances probably aren't the same anymore...hence the thought that a thicker oil might be better.
Rumours surround that some oil called 'Royal Purple' is some of the best oil on the market for turboed cars but it costs a substantial amount and isn't readily available at your local Supercrap auto (useless information you didn't really need to know).

OK; we'll take this step by step. Step 1 is to change the filter with a original Toyota ( which is still made by Denso btw) filter. The current one is a crappy blue noname yum-cha/noodle with rice smelling filter.

Then if step 1 doesn't work, we'll move on to step 2 ( changing oil to different rating ).
