Does the pulley on the front of the water pump come off? Or do you have to buy a whole new water pump? If i do need to buy a new water pump does the timing belt have to come off??

Its a 91 TT

Why is it that you want to remove the pulley? Most people replace the timing belt when they replace the water pump as part of the 100,000km service.

The water pump was replaced at 100K, it is around 1 year old now.

My mechanic has tested all the pulleys due to this squeaking noise im getting and finally has found that it is coming from the water pump.

The noise is louder nearest to the pulley on the water pump. He wants to know if the pulley is separate from the water pump, he doesnt want to take the whole water pump out because he thinks he has to take the timing belt out another $400 labour job.

Im not to sure if the water pump comes with the pulley or if it is separate.

And if the water pump comes with the pulley does the timing belt have to come off.

The water pump is a 2 piece unit. The front detaches from the rear which makes it a hell of allot easier to replace just the front instead of ripping the whole lot out.

From memory (did it over a year ago) the pulley is on the front housing and timing belt needs to be removed to change it over.

having a look at these pictures, you can see that the timing belt would go past the front of the water pump.
Even if you only removed the front half of the pump, it appears as though you will need to still remove the belt to get to the pump.
other photo's show the timing belt tensioner is in the way of some of the bolts for the water pump also, so no matter how i am looking at it it definately seems as though the belt needs to come off to get to the pump, whether the front half of the pump or the whole pum.
Also from memory, i wasn't able to source the front half of the pump only, it was just one whole part from toyota. So unless you are willing to just throw away the rear casting of the pump and just use the front half, you are up for the same price for the pump regardless.
