How cheap?
Grab a 1 way air (set to intake only) valve and put it at the end of a rubber hose coming off the intake manifold. Then attach a small valve and use to adjust the idle, the valve can be a cheap ebay boost controller for example.

I notice with extra earth cable it helps bring the idle back to normal. Or clean the spot where your main earth cable is bolted to.

Mine idles at 700rpm and 900rpm with aircon on.

You must be watching over my shoulder! I ordered all the bits from DemonTweeks last night - I didn't mention it in case someone had an easier solution! I can't seem to find an appropriate ball valve though.

630rpm for me according to SAFC. 700RPM if the voltage of the battery gets below around 11 volts.
450-580RPM after an ECU reset until it re-learns.

not the ones sitting directly under the throttle or cruise linkages facing downwards, it's the one that is a bit tucked in under the cruise linkage mechanism, facing towards the front of the car. Use 8 mm socket with an extension to loosen the lock nut first, and a 2.5mm allen key to turn the screw clockwise. wind idle speed up to 800, and c if there is still a miss.

I tried introducing additional air via a one-way valve but ran into problems. Worked fine at first but then the idle got slower and slower until it was back where it started. I'm guessing that this was due to the ECU telling the Idle Valve to close up to allow for that extra air coming from somewhere. That is just a guess though.

I then tried Freeman's suggestion of moving that screw. This seems to have made a lot of difference. I have a solid idle at about 900rpm in D and the engine hasn't stalled since I made the adjustment. Seems OK so far.

That didn't work out too well either. I would get a nice idle in D but in P or N the revs and AFRs would fluctuate considerably.

I've now gone back to plan A - introducing extra air - and seem to be having better results this time. I've added a one-way valve to the pipe which went to the BOVs on the stock setup, which available since I went single. Idle speed lurks around 800-1000 but more importantly the engine doesn't seem to stall any more.

Update: The one-way valve seems to be working OK. No more stalling.

I was chatting with a tuner last week and he reckoned that my problem could be that the pipe from my idle control valve isn’t drawing from the air intake any more (it’s just got one of those mini filters). His theory was that the idle control valve expects to be allowing a certain amount of airflow (obviously) but that this was calculated on the basis that the pressure in the air intake is lower than ambient because air is rushing through it. Air introduced directly from the intake pipe (for the idle control valve) at the back of the engine bay will be at a higher pressure and also a higher temperature of course.

We all know about low pressure caused by fluid flow but I know that other people have used these mini filters with no ill effect. Does anyone think this is worth pursuing?
