Okay, have no idea how to explain this one exactly, so here goes my description.

After I have started my car (regardless of whether it's the first time for the day, or the 20th), I chuck it in reverse and an audible whirr noise can be heard from the left passenger side of the car. Sometimes it does it twice while in reverse. I then stop but the car in Drive and then hear the audible whirr noise again. While the car is driving and on, I won't hear this again. It only happens after startup.

I know it's not the A/C changing vent mode, because I have driven my car and played with the auto switch and watched the mode's change and noticed the vents change with barely no noise at all (like I would suspect).

Any ideas?

Is it a mechanical whir? or does it sound like bubbles?

I'd ask Neil.

Sounds like something to do with your left wheel, bearing or something that heats up as you drive and shuts up. Or not

Power Steering Pump.
Checked fluids lately?

Most the time I've found that when you hear that whirr noise it's the P/S pump...

Electric backing antenna? In reverse it goes up and when in drive it goes back down?

Sorry cant really help you. I am sure that someone with more experience will be able to though.

It's a short mechanical whir. It lasts for maybe 1-2 seconds. Hanre not sure if it would be the power steering, as the steering is fine and no other problems with it (knock on wood) - it drives and corners beautifully. Shaun I don't have a Electric Backing Antenna.

It's not a bearing as it would do it all the time. It's like something is adjusting itself.

Dan no I don't notice it with the brakes. As an example, I back up (foot not on brake - car under motion from reverse gear) and it does it during this time. I can brake but it in gear and drive off (second whirr occurs here).

I can start the car, and put it in Drive and drive off, and it can happen a few seconds after driving off. No Klingon, everything else is fine (knock on wood).

Edit: Only happens at the very beginning of me starting the car. Otherwise normal driving is perfectly fine.

Cihan, not sure if it the TEMS or not. My ECT switch is set to Normal. Also I have TEINS HR's, but still have the TEMS caps on the top of the struts (still connected).

What if you put it into reverse but don't actually drive backwards? Just sit there for a few minutes?

I'll give that a shot this afternoon and report back. However if I remember correctly it doesn't do anything, but will confirm.

While you are at it, see if it repeats the noise by going back and forwards a few times, possibly also see if it sounds different at different speeds. If possible, have a mate listen to see if he can hear it outside the car and/or a mate in the back seat to help confirm where the noise is coming from.

I think I know the noise you are talking about Will. Mine does the same thing. Start her up, back out of the drive way, into drive and turning at the same time and there is a slight whirr, you never hear it other than at that time.

I don't think it is a problem, I have always thought it was just something activating, the pump getting ready or something like that. Doesn't sound fatal. Sounds kind of cool actually :-)

Luke similar, but I don't have the steering wheel turned at all. In fact the wheel is straight backing out. It happens during this time as well. Put it in drive and go forward (with wheel straight) and again.

It does sound kinda cool, like it's getting ready for whatever darn reason.

Yeah come to think of it mine isn't always with the wheel turned. It's a similar sound to the flaps on a plane operating...thats what I can think of. Only a lot quieter.

I think it might be your climate controll settings.?
You know when you change from feet to face or outside air to inside, that sort of makes a whirring noise when the flaps move?
Maybe thats why it does it on every start up, then again mine doesnt!

I have heard similar on a couple of occasions. I put it down to fuel pump pressurising the lines ready for a 10g launch and maintaining sub orbital velocities.

i have actually heard of powersteering pumps causing this noise and you dont even have to be turning the wheel or nothing. its usually caused by a leak in the powersteering hose. check the fluid level in the powersteering even if it looks a relatively normal level put more fluid in or check to see if the powersteering fluid is throthing up.

My ABS motor kicks in at around 5 - 6kms when car first started, in forward or reverse. It makes a kinda whirring noise. Maybe this is the sound your hearing?

Adam wouldn't this then cause the problem all the time with the car making the noise? Wouldn't it affect the steering as well?

Cliff that may be it. It's about this speed that it happens.

no it doesnt happen all the time and it doesn't affect the steering at all, but can cause the whirring noise your talking about

Yeah Will, usually only happens once after start up and only when you hit 5-6kms. Like I say, the ABS motor can kick in when reversing or going forwards. If you have your lights on sometimes you can see them dip slightly as the ABS motor draws current.

Ah-hah!!!! Digging up this old thread again. I think I have confirmed what has been making this noise. Last night I did a brake fluid flush on the car and took it for a drive to make everything was working okay. After a few stops to get the pads going and make sure everything was working, decided to do a bit of a hard stop (basically to the point where ABS is kicking in). So this is what happens:

1) Accelerating
2) Slam on the brakes
3) Car brakes solidly and ABS kicks in
4) After the car has stopped dead in it's tracks, you can then hear the mechanical whirr again. Almost like it's resetting itself waiting for the next ABS diagnosed stop.
