Ok here are the stats:
1992 TT
Manual
Mid-range FMIC
Surge tank
T}ail happy (irrelevant but sick)
0.5 Bar boost, stock turbos
169000kms on clock

Problem
Ok, if you accel slowly (low throttle) the engine revs smoothly, however if you plant the throttle more than halfway the engine revs stutter (misses) all the way to redline and its makes a sort of bubbly noise similar to the bubbly backfire noise you get when you lift of the throttle while in gear with some cars. This problem is intermittent and only happens when I accelerate hard. It still pulls pretty damn hard, and there was no noticeable smoke from the exhaust whilst under load.

Possible answers...
Fuel pump is whiny as all hell and may need replacing.
Clean air/fuel filters/injectors
Replace coil packs or leads and plugs
Reset ECU to correct air/fuel ratio
Throttle position sensor damaged at the end of its range.

Any more thoughts?

"Replace coil packs or leads and plugs"

Had the same problem, did the above (leads & plugs), fixed it.

Yup... sounds familiar.

When's the last time the spark plugs were changed?

yeah i had same problem, i replaced plugs and found 3 coil packs with hairline cracks in them, that were causing the trouble.

Ditto all the above, same thing happened to me, all coil covers were cracked so had new ones installed, also changed the plugs and all fixed. I was told that the backfire noise means the engine is on the verge of detonation and it's only that the ECU is so sophisticated that it stops this from happening.

sounds like an electrical fault, it happens only under load, but test the fuel pump ecu first coz its easy. Bridge +B and FP in the diag port under the hood, that will make the fuel pump work at full voltage. If no fix, change plugs first, use NGK BKR6E. If no fix, change coil packs, if still no good, change ignitor.

A simple dyno run will tell u about the air fuel ratio when u put ur foot down/engine under load. That will tell u if ur fuel pump needs r/r.

Hehe...he just needs a little gentle therapy (who doesn't?)
Thanks for all your help everyone...I'll work on the basics first (naturally) and then should all else fail I'll put a sniffer up the tailpipe.

Cheers all

Yeah I had the same thing happening.
Could the problem be low octane fuel?
Mine was doing it (stuttering) uphill and a mate suggested I run Premium 98 Ethanol(?) and add some octane booster.
I did and it seems to have gone.
Now that I read this I am going to replace leads plugs and seriously look at my coil packs too.

The Soarer is designed for 100 Octane in Japan, So best thing to do is Run Optimax, BP Ultimate, Mobil 8000, Vortex 98 Or any other Fuel that is 98 to 100 Octane.

You shouldnt use the cheap stuff. If you have been using the cheap stuff i would also change the Fuel Filter if i were you.
