Firstly check your turbo's to see if all the wheels are still there because if it did suck 1 into the engine then you have a rebuild on your hands.

If it has sucked in the turbine wheel, then say good bye to both your engine and turbos. I'd be doing a compression test on the engine.

Wouldn't a compressor wheel end up in the intercooler? And a turbine wheel out the exhaust?

The turbo wheels are ceramic so if by chance part of it did make it into the engine it would just end up as dust and not break anything I think. If you have steel wheels than that would be bad news.

By the way, what exactly were you fixing on your car? I would be looking in that area for problems rather than assuming your engine ate a turbo wheel.

I am trying to work out how the hell a wheel would end up in the engine...

If it's the compressor wheel, it would have to travel THROUGH the turbocharger first, then through the piping to the intercooler, where it would flap around for a good while, then from the intercooler through the flat plastic pipe to the bend to travel upward defying gravity, and into the intake plenum, then from there it might have a chance to get into the piston cavity.

If it is the exhaust wheel, it's already getting blown out the exhaust, and would have to fight through the exhaust gas to get back into the engine, very unlikely.

Also... if the car was being free-revved (under no load) then i doubt very much that there would have been enough pressure built up to propel a wheel that far.

If it was to happen it'd have to be out on the road with your foot down.

Leads me to believe it's cam belt rather than turbo wheel....

BTW, can a mod fix the thread title, wheel needs the 'h' in there.

Yes i think we were side tracked do not think turbo wheels have a thing to do with it??
If we are right there may be minor damage....not sure if engine is std....

You'll find the cams inside the car. They are like the race cams used in motorsport when you see in car views, but in the soarer their really tiny, being japanese car (they are king of tiny), so look around in the car, should see them. Better make sure you haven't had sex or play with yourself in the car as it'll be recorded and toyota know about it, and probably post it on youtube....

Under the cam covers mate

They are the two cast metal parts right in the middle of the engine, next to the coil packs, and spark plugs.

You shouldn't need to look at the cams, you need to look at the cam belt itself. Its behind the plastic cover at the front of the engine, closest to the fan.

Do a compression test, the tester is around $30 from supercheap auto. Should be at least 156psi, preferably 170+ across all 6 cyls, no more than 14psi difference between cylinders.

You just pull out your coilpacks, remove your spark plugs, and screw the compression tester in to each spark plug hole.
Crank the engine over with your foot flat to the floor on the accelerator until the compression tester needle won't go any higher, then stop and write down the reading. Then do the next cylinder etc.
If one has a really low reading then you might be up for a new motor.
