Just a question, I know that the timing marks on my cam gears should both be at 12 o'clock but while doing some basic maintenance I noticed that the intake cam gear mark was at approx. 2 o'clock? I know that the previous owner was a dodgy mechanic but i'm not sure what effect this has to the overall running condition of my car...
Did you hear any sound coming out from the engine bay when you were driving a little bit harder? Maybe you just need a simple fine tune. When was the last time you change the timing belt?

If it doesn't go to TDC on first rotation try rotating the assembly again. It takes 2 full revolutions for the motor to get to TDC on crank and cam gears.
If still an issue....I'd be surprised how that car even ran being that far off, as it would be sputtering and having a very rough idle.
