I just got home before and heard a really loud metallic rattle coming from the drivers side of the engine bay, and when i had a look I saw a small fan and a big plastic bit sitting under the main fan.
I had a look and the fan is part #88453A Cooling Fan, and the plastic bit is part #16712 Fan Shroud No. 2. I couldnt see any other bits loose in there, but will check tomorrow.
So what i need to know is what do these parts actually do, can i drive it without them, and where can i get replacement parts?

The small fan is the A/C assist fan, not that important in winter. The shroud helps the main fan, but again, probably not a big issue at this time of year.
I suggest you check the main fan for damage, as it looks like the small fan got caught in the main fan and then knocked the shroud off. If the main fan is damaged, then it will be out of balance and could destroy itself at high revs itself causing much more significant damage.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have checked the main fan and there is no visible damage to it, and there are no wobbles or noises when it is spinning. It also looks as though nothing else was damaged when the parts came off, all the hoses and belts in the general area look fine so I think I have gotten off pretty well.
I have found one fan unit for sale, but I'm not sure what a reasonable price would be?

I think this fan only comes on when your car is stationary, for example when your sitting at the traffic lights, it gives air to the radiator, if you need to drive it just keep the car moving lol!

driving without a fan or a fan that is unbalanced (one fin is broken) is stupid!!! not to mention dangerous. the fan runs even when you are driving. and if the fan is unbalanced its going to loosen up the studs holding the fan clutch. in extreme cases the fan can come off and rip through a bonnet. i have seen a video of it happen. i recommend electric fans, takes alot of load of the engine, and does just as well job for cooling... biggest bang for your buck!
