Ok guys, I WAS rebuilding a 1J;

But seeing as certain mates in the parts trade have neglected to order certain ex-japan only parts that I needed for the build, it is not going to happen before the deadline I need the car back on the road for (20/10/07)!!!

So here's where its at, I have nicely worked 1J head, new water pump, new engine mounts, new radiator, new ARP head stud conversion, and a broken 1J block in pieces, and a 2J block sitting collecting dust in a mates shed...

Thinking what I'm thinking? Just incase you're not, I'm thinking a 1.5J is looking bloody good atm as that block is all good and ready to go!

Having trawled though the SC archive, I haven't really found anything other than a lot of posts that seem to contradict the post previous in the thread. Anyone here actually DONE the 1.5J conversion (as in hands on, not hand over parts and money and come back a week later)?

From what I have gathered, engine mounts should be the same, as should most of the wiring (what does need changing?). What about gearbox, that be ok? I'm guessing that 440's will be mandatory (all ready en-route). Only drama is that until my mate gets back from Japan (3-4 months) I'm stuck using the stock ct12a's as my new turbo money is with him for a turbo shopping spree over there. Seeing as I drive like a grandpa 99% of the time though, I can't see this being a major drama? What about ecu, piggy back be ok?

Anything that I'm overlooking here? Where the car will be, there is 2 radiator gurus, 3 mechanics and 2 welder/fabricators and a machinist, so I think that we have labour all under control.

Sorry for the massive post, just need a bit of a point in the right direction! Cheers

Hi ben

I have been looking into this myself. From what i can gather, there needs to a small modification to the 1j head and also 1 pipe on the water pump needs to be longer as the block is taller than a 1jz. (do search on toymods and there is pics of work done to the head and also the water pump mod)

also if it is a ge block and not a gze block you will need to lower the compression (possibly with new pistons)

i think the quickest and cheapest option would be to drop another 1j in there to get you going. save the headaches and all the $ as building a 1.5j is something that you would want to do properly the first time (proper bottom end rebild with lower comp pistons than ge, hks or similar head gasket etc.

i would just whack a new timing belt and water pump on a 2nd hand 1j from sombody. ( I have one laying about as a spare if your desperate)

Hope this helps

Nah its a GTE block, only has 35,000km on it :-)

If water pipes are my only concerm then that is all sweet coz my radiator guy can whip up a custom water pump in his sleep so don't think that modding the existing one will be an issue!

Oh, and unfortunately I dont have the luxury of going out and buying another 1J for now, been taken for a ride by the last engine builder so until legal action goes my way then I'm living off the credit card :/

Speak to JHH in QLD. they are the only guys i know of doing the cyliner head mods. The weld up one section and move a hole.

http://www.workin4u.com/jhh/home.htm

apart from this it is a simple bolt on affair. And use the 2jz serpantine belt tensioner.

I have been doing alot of research on this myself..

ps. if you know of any other 2jzgte complete bottome ends about let me know.

Thanks
