I purchased a greddy timing belt from a group buy. Even though I rigorously made sure the organizer of the group buy knew I had a 1jz-gte I have received a 2jz timing belt. I have tried contacting the group by organizer but he is on holidays so I don't know when I will hear back from him.

My question is will this timing belt fit? Or do I need to get a 1jz-gte specific one?

My timing belt from toyota said JZA80 on it as well. So did the rear main engine seal I think.

But they both fit.

So to answer your question. I believe it will fit.

But lets wait for a pro to confirm that.

My understanding was that the 2JZ belt was slightly longer, but I could be wrong.

Might just have been the rear main engine seal...

Or hang on...might just have been the new engine mounts and water pump....thats right, the engine mounts and water pump are the same...not sure about the timing belt or engine seal.

LOL. Sorry...thats why I should just not give any help with mechanical things.

I have also heard the 2JZ belt is longer than the 1JZ one.

tis longer than the 1jZ, however the tensioner will take up the slack.

I'm in the middle of a 1.5J build so I may be of some help!

The front and rear main seals are the same across both 1 an 2J's, but the timing belts ARE different. If you use the tensioner to take up all the slack it will be pretty much at full extension, so if/when the belt does eventually stretch there won't be any more tension available to cope with it.

Thanks for the info. I think its best I try and get this belt swapped over.

Probably not a good idea to let the tensioner over extend though - the belt will stretch over time anyway, so it may cause problems eventually.
