MKIV Supra TT auto.
This has really got me stumped. Still can't stop the Supra from pinging.
Have tried swapping over ECU's map sensor, throttle position sensor. Later I put in a New fuel filter, then a new 500hp+ fuel pump, which made it ping less. Than I did the 12v mod which didn't make any difference.
It runs perfectly below 4grand before it comes on boost. Once it's on boost it will ping a tiny bit before the engine cuts out around 5grand and an exclamation mark flashes on the dash.
I've pulled the error codes which pointed to the ECU and sub-throttle position sensor. Not exactly sure what a sub-throttle position sensor is?
Anyone got any ideas??
I even had a long chat with a reputable supra mechanic and he's got no idea, says he would have tried exactly what I've done.

if all fails...
take it to a toyota, ...run a diagnotsics test.. (although it sounds like you already pulled the error codes), let them diagnose the problem/point it out...and then you go from there your way, or their way...

Tried a different ECU? Like lend one? No fuel blockages in the fuel lines?

Also Neil is right (as usual) check all timing marks are in. One of my mates had this problem in his Galant VR4 and found out his exhaust cam jumped a tooth...made a huge difference.

i would start with what neil said. then run diagnostics and failing that then i would check AFR's under load on a dyno

As mentioned I've already put in a new fuel filter. However the worrying part was when I took out the old fuel pump as it was covered in metal shavings .
I swapped ECUs with my mates Supra who has same thing as me. I also bypassed the FCD and SCD to eliminate them as a cause.
Neil you might be onto something as it has an adjustable cam gear on the exhaust, will check to ensure it hasn't come loose.
Michael, do you know where's the knock sensor located?

If it has the OLD style HKS Adjustable Cam gear, 99% its jumped a tooth... These things wear out and they jump all the time...

Only recently did HKS upgrade their materials to stop this from happening. Either way, it pushed the sale of Greddy Adj Cam gears WAY up!

How much Boost is it running? As i thought the Boost cut on a Supra was in the 16-17psi range.

Yep it's a HKS cam gear. On the upside it's not loose, and it doesn't look worn either. I need to get a free weekend to line up all the timing marks. I just hope getting the timing belt covers isn't a f@#ked up process like the Soarer
Is there any obvious way of identifying whether you have a new or old style HKS cam gear?? It was already on the car when we bought it about 6months ago.

Here is the difference between the old hks and new

The old has blue coating on it and the purple is more of a light/pink colour than the new ones

The new ones have been around for quite a while now.. close to 2 years and the old ones were discontinued.

YEah mate, Dont drive it until you get it fixed... If it jumps more teeth, it will destroy engine parts:-(

Even if you find someone parting with the stock ones, Or best bet... Greenline and get a Greddy one to replace it with:-)

Either way, i would advise against driving it dude.

Don't have much of a choice in not driving it. My girlfriend needs it to go to work and back, and her son is too young to go on the back of the bike.
While the Soarer is still in bits it's the only car we have to get around in. It doesn't hit boost so I figure it should be alright for another week. I'll be changing the timing belt at the same time as its just clocked over 100,000km.
I've managed to track down a stock cam gear so that will have to do for a while.

Its not a matter of hitting boost and detonating.. Its a matter of the cam belt slipping numerous amounts of teeth and causing the hurt.

Hopefully it doesnt happen and you will get it all sorted asap:-)

Going to fix it as soon as I can, ordering a complete timing belt kit with the tensioner, etc that needs replacing costing $190, not sure if that's a good price?
Hoping to have the Soarer back together this weekend too depending if I can get my manifold modified today.

you still haven't told us what the base timing is!!!!!!! why won't you???? it will take a toyota mechanic two minutes to check it. really easy. don't bother searching for or changing anything else until you have checked the base timing.read my lips-" tell us the base timing".

Trying to get it booked in to get the timing checked but pretty hard to fit it in around work. Hopefully my missus can get it done by the end of the week.
What's the base timing meant to be at?
Neil or anyone else that knows, what position are the timing marks meant to be at?? A diagram would be great. I'm getting ready to do the major service.
