Guys, besides having to go to the gym and build up some arnold schwarzenegger muscles, is there a better way to take off the turbo manifolds? I can't seem to crack the bolts with a ring wrench, and my breaker bar can't fit in the small space as the bolt is so close to the manifold.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Get a can of innox and soak the bolts in that. It does work wonders.

apart from that... get back to the gym. But breaker bar or something similar to slip over spanner to help with leverage helps

Yeah, thats about all you can do, just persevere with it. That one last attempt as your about to give up is usually the one that cracks it.

Another good thing is buy a small butane flame torch. They are great for undoing VERY tight nuts. Heat up the area, and have another crack at it.

I have vowed never to remove the stock turbos/manifolds with the engine in the bay. I got an engine hoist for that exact reason.

trevor
best bet would have been get the manifolds hot before inox on it
every thing hot so the metal has expanded
the inox gets in a lot better.
Having said that
keep on soaking mate
and use good quality spanners not the cheap crap from super cheap.
if you round off any then i will hear you up here on the coast screaming ya tits off.

Make sure you have a good hold on the lower nut on the front turbo that one is a real sh*t if you round it off

Two good ring spanners and a BFH will do,Or a extended length ring spanner and BFH.....Hahaha

Just in case,You ain't tightening them instead of loosening them? The amount of time's I have seen people do this is a blowout. But sometimes if you tighten first,You could also crack the nut to be able to loosen it.RP7,WD40 or Inox should be soaked the night before.

Engine out and use a rattle gun

Ok for people that don't have a mates workshop at theri beck and call, a good quality breaker bar usually suffices. Having said that, I have managed to shear the end off a snap-on 3/4" drive dreaker bar before, although that may have something to do with the 9' pole that was on the end of it!

Just do it the dodgy way, place a spanner on the nut, and keep hitting it with a hammer until it cracks lose (a joyous feeling every time haha) At least that's how I took out my turbos first time haha.

dont forget to go and buy a 10,12 and 14mm CHEAP spanners, and put a 45deg bend in them (the bend is best closer to the closed loop side then open), this was the best advice i took from this forum when i did mine..... (cheap spanners bend best, high quality ones can actually snap) due to the material used

Trevor, you require the following non-standard items for removal of turbochargers and manifold:

-Swear Jar
-Peristence
-Bandaids (snoopy bandaids are best)
-Another swear jar for when the first one is full
-Something breakable but not valuable (when you loose it)
-Beer or other alcohol to celebrate when the bolt lets go.

With these essential items, you should be ready to go.

We found "Wurth Rost-Off" was really good for stuck or old rusty bolts, my mechanic mate gave me a can of the stuff, and I got up at various times during the night before to spray the stuff on the bolts. That way it was nice and soaked in by the time he showed up the next morning. Bolts came off nice and easy :-)
