Just wondering what prices people have been quoted to have their power steering and alternator replaced? Mines leaked and killed the alternator as usual. I would normally do it myself but these days i just dont have the time anymore.

when you say powersteering, do you just mean the pump? i wonder how the power steering pump has leaked , and damaged your alternator when they are on opposite sides?

Maybe you mean the starter motor?
It really depends how you want to go about it, if you want to just rebuild it or replace with a new or second hand one.
Workshops charge approx $50-$90 (depending who) per hour so just take it from there. I'd guess around 4 hours labour alone to change. Don't forget the parts pricing on top of that.

Sorry I meant the starter motor. After spending a good few hours diagnosing the battery/terminal/alternator/starter motor etc I started to lose my mind hehe.
Thanks for the info Chris. So far starter motor looks to be about $175 brand new. After thinking about it I think im going to have to do this myself, its just going to cost too much in labour to have this done by a mechanic.
Does anyone know of anythin in particular I should pay attention to when removing and reinstalling the pump/reservior/starter. Looks fairly straight forward from what I saw but Ive learnt to never underestimate Soarers!

power steering pump is easy to remove. From memory there are 3 bolts holding it in. Can get rebuild kits for about $80 + $10 for a new bearing. Most likely it is just an o-ring that leaks and that is from the line from the resivour where it goes into the pump. Saves having to rebuild the whole thing.
I have a spare one of these o-rings at home as i just replaced mine. Dont use rubber o-rings as they wont last long with oil on them.
Once you got it all back together just bleed the air out by having front jacked up and turning from hard left to hard right full lok. do this until resevoir stops bubbling and pump stops whining.

Chris, youre probably right. It appears that its leaking from that hose area. Does anyone have suggestions as to where I can get one of these? Also, whats in a rebuild kit exactly? Ive never used one before.
Matt, sounds like a good idea. Ill contact Neil. Thanks for the info.
One other thought: Is there any chance that my power steering pump could be permanantly damaged after leaking for awhile? its not making any grinding noises so I assume its OK, or is that a foolish assumption?

Dave, if it's just been leaking, it should be fine. Toyota generally use "vane" style pumps (no bloody idea what that means) all i know is that you MUST keep fluid in there, otherwise it will start going all cheesegrater-like and wreck your relief valve.
A kit is essentially just all new seals/o-rings etc, so long as you have a bench vice and some arm strength to pull it apart, you will be fine.
NOTE OF CAUTION: make sure you cover ALL internal parts in petroleum jelly aka Vaselene, otherwise when you turn the car over to get fluid into the pump, you WILL root the pump you just fixed.

Nah mate, she's pretty straight forward. Just don't loose any of the rotor fins!! They're just sat in there. If you're a bit anxious about doing it, do what I have done before and have someone video how you pulled things apart, awesome for the "where the bloody hell does that go?" question

Does anyone know where to get these rebuild kits and the bearings? Also im not that great mechanically, and a bit hesitant on playing with the pump, anyone in Sydney who has done this before willing to do the job for me? Cheers

Gavin mate, another excellent idea. Youre on a roll tonight! Ive never thought of video taping the dissassembly before but that makes so much sense.
Anuradha, Im on the same boat as you. Ive never taken one apart, but Im pretty confident in other aspects of the car so I think I'll give it a shot. I was just going to take it to a mechanic at first, but I think the cost difference is just going to be too large so Ill be doing it at home.
Also a big thank you to Neil G who gave me a bit of advice even though he did not have any parts to sell me. Legend!

Cheers David, let us know how you end up. Vinh if you don't mind i was wondering if i can have the contact details for your mechanic, and see if he can do the same for me.

OK guys Ive *finally* taken off the power steering pump. From what I can see it seems Christian was right, in that the leak appears to be coming from the hose that connects the reservior to the pump. Obviously I just need to replace the hose/use new worm connectors and O ring. My question now is, is it worth rebuilding the pump? Liek I said before the pump didnt make grinding noises etc. So should I just not try and fix whats not broken, or should I do it while its out and considerign that the hose leaked the rest of the pump bearings might be on their way out?

If it's out and you don't need the car, then why not? It will give you a bit more leeway before it does start to leak. Seal kit is approx $90 from toyota, the bearing you only need to replace if there is excessive shaft play from side to side.
