My water pump is starting to leak out the rubber hose bit near the bottom, and I plan on replacing it as soon as I can get one in.
Should I do the timing belt etc while I'm doing this? or is it easier/better to just do the pump. I've got another 40000km to go before the next 100000k service.
Is there anything else I need to do with the water pump?

hey mate your better off doing the timming belt at the same time as you have to remove it to extract the water pump and if you only have 4000k left before service. if your paying someone to do it you will pay twice.

Yeah, thanks Luciano.
I'll be doing it myself, just wasn't sure if the timing belt had to come off to get to the water pump, or if it could be done by itself.
I've done the searches and will source the parts this week.

Cheers again

Hey Gary,

Get timing belt, water pump, thermostat. Also some new rubber o-rings for the pipe that goes between the water pump and top water hose. Also get the new rubber o-ring seal (goes behind water pump and block, not sure if it comes with the water pump though, it might). Also splurge and get a serpentine belt ($36!!)

Think that's it. You HAVE to remove timing belt to remove water pump, so change. Also check your bearings on the timing belt tensioner and serpentine tensioner.

Cheers Justin.

I'm ordering the following parts this afternoon.
Is there anything else I'll need?

Timing Belt + tensioner
Water pump (+ o-ring seal behind w'pump)
o-rings for pipe from w'pump to top hose
Serpentine Belt + tensioner
Coolant - toyota red

Not sure if I need crankshaft and camshaft seals.
(anyone know what they're worth? I might get them anyway)

Is there anything else I'll need?

Thanks

I'll put up part Nos. and prices tonight.
Everything was ex stock from castle hill toyota.
The local toyota dealer was fairly unhelpful, and I was unsure if some of the part Nos I had were correct (and there were some I didn't have at all)

Can anyone tell me if I need a puller to get the harmonic balancer off?

Parts List for timing belt/water pump replacement

Water pump, P/N 16100-49846, $162(includes all seals and o-rings)
Timing Belt, P/N 13568-49025, $70
Timing Belt Tensioner, P/N 13540-46030, $133
Timing Belt Idler, P/N 13505-46020, $116 (Not sure if I needed this but did it anyway)
2x Camshaft seals, P/N 90311-38041, $14each
Crankshaft Seal(front), P/N 90311-46001, $28
Thermostat, P/N 90916-03093, $24
Radiator Cap, P/N 16401-72090, $18

I needed the radiator cap anyway. Not sure if I needed the crankshaft and camshaft seals but thought I'd err on the side of caution, same for the timing belt idler. I don't want to have to do this again soon!

Any tips or cautions would be appreciated.

Oh, and:

Serpentine Belt, P/N 90916-A2007, $39.

I didn't get a tensioner for the serpentine belt cause I was quoted $300 for it!

Can anyone tell me how the hell they got those 2x12mm bolts to the water pipe underneath the turbos undone.

I'm having all sorts of fun trying to undo them as well as the top thermostat housing nut....not!

Cheers
Dan.

Dan & Dale

There's a link on this forum to a guide on replacing water pump, timing belt, seals etc its a very detailed guide...

When I did mine I had a 'great time' trying to fit my hand in there. The guide said you need incredibly small hands to fit in there, but just hang in there and try different vantage points to be able to get some leverage.

Gary, try and source a secondhand supra Serpentine tensioner pulley, most of them are steel and you can just knock the centre bearing out and replace with new bearing which costs around $7.
