hey guys
when i start my soarer when its completely cold i get a loud audible knocking sounds for a good 10 seconds and then it quietens down.
what could be causing this sound? sticky lifters? tappets?

Dirty/old oil, when was it serviced last?

Last time I had that on my non-soarer car was when the oil was starting to get a bit used, it would take a little while to get the oil lubricating on the tappets.

Another problem could be warn oil pump taking a while to get the pressure up as well.

if its something like sticky lifters or tappets then thats not to worrying
it would be the bottom end bearing at all would it?

No lifters in an OHC motor. Noisy tappets will make a clicking sound and last longer than 10 seconds.

If you start, wait 10s and it goes away, then stop the motor and start it again, will it do it again?

Listen and see where it's coming from. It's not coming from an accessory is it? Worst case, you're gonna lose a bearing on the crank. Check your oil level. Then change it. Check your oil pressure. Maybe the pump is worn and is slow to bring the pressure up. Have you modified your oiling system in any way?

no motor and pump are completely standard,
it only does it when the motor is cold, on a warm start up it doesnt make any knocking sound

i've got the same problem. only does it on cold start up for about 5 seconds, plus the oil light is on for the same duration as the noise.

Mine too, I'm guessing something to do with the oil pressure also taking time to build. I've never worried about it as only happens for less than 5 seconds on cold start only and after that, it is lubricated.

Although, come to think about it. When I had the bonnet open trying to listen for it, I opened the throttle very slightly, and could still hear the noise ticking faster as rpm went up, but very, very faint. Noisy lifters or valves?

possible wrong grade oil, for the temp you are in?
5 seconds everytime your start the car cold, can do a fair bit of damage. 80% of wear is on start up.

sound like it could the a spun Big end bearing on its way out, if you bearings are good at startup you will have no noise. If oil pressure stops the noise, it the is cushioning the shaft and the bearings.

It's tappets if it's only from cold start and only for a short burst.

When engine sits for a while, oil drains down, when engine starts, oil needs to pump up in between the tappets and other areas.

If you stop the motor and start it again without noise, it's definately tappets, time for an oil change to a slightly thicker oil so that the thicker oil takes slightly longer to seep down again, and will also increase the pressure slightly as well.

Bearing noise wont stop if it starts, no matter how slight the bearings are worn, once they make noise they keep making noise.

I had a big-end bearing on it's way which I could hear from 132,000kms on a CA18DET, and it was still 'on it's way' at 189,000kms, but definately worse, and it never went silent.

A cheap oil filter without an anti-drain back valve might not help either.

a worn motor wont hold oil pressure for long after shutdown, it will seep out throught bearings etc.

but it is a very good way to tell the condition of interal bearings in a engine. with a oil pressure gauge. it should drop of slowly over a minute or 2

I had the same thing....didnt think anything of it....turned out to be bottom end bearings.

The engine was still alrite I thought...but I swapped the engine anyway. Now I'm loving it....I rekon it actually is faster because the engine is in better condition.

For a second hand one thats possibly in the same condition, or, a rebuilt one with brand new everything?

$800 and $6700 respectively.
If you want a 500rwkw capable 2JZ with forged pistons and rods expect closer to nine grand assembled.

So is this noise something to be alarmed about, I mean is it expensive to fix. What sort of money would I be looking at to fix? My car is making this noise on a cold start up at idle. However as said above, it goes away quite quickly and the car seems to be performing strongly.

Thanks

What makes them so expensive?

I'm assuming the $6700 would be a motor with some nice goodies stashed on the inside.
