Hi everyone,
My soarer has an open differential (plate under the hood says A02A)... unfortunately.
Anyway, when I want to launch really quick from a stand still I'd rev the engine up, then let go of the clutch. I would hear grinding like noises from the rear, which I think is coming from the differential. It did hop at the front I think as well. Can anyone confirm?
I've heard of cases where there was grinding noises and a loud bang, which means the diff is blown. But mine hasn't gone bang yet. I'm thinking of getting my mechanic to open up the different and inspect it. If its buggered or cogs are chipped, I want to get an lsd.

Thanks Peter, I'm going to get the diff oil changed sometime soon and check out if there are any chips.
Luke, haha only can wind up the boost to 15psi at the moment. Not sure whats stopping it from further boostage. Might ask around on group Dyno day. Hope ya been well mate.

Ken its not a good idea to drive it around if you think its the diff, It wont be long untill its completly undriveable and you will get stuck and have to get it towed.
Id recommend going to your Mechanic ASAP and getting the diff inspected to make sure its not damaged.

Just thought, it could also be a wheel bearing, I had a big grinding noise coming from the back of my car all of a sudden not long ago, I took it in and it turned out to be a wheel bearing.

I replaced my diff oil in the weekend. Wasn't so hard. I think my oil was still good, it was brown but it wasn't black, it didn't smell bad either. So I replaced it the oil anyway with Penrite oil.
I found some small pieces of metal that had been broken off the cogs (or whatever you call them). Can I assume that the differential is still good? The car still drives fine normally.

I am not entirely sure but I would say it should be ok just to drive around, maybe just don't do too many hard launches (not good to do all the time anyway lol, I broke 2 clutches and a tail-shaft uni joint that way ) And start looking into getting an LSD, with 250rwkw+ the open diff probably isnt going to last that long anyway.

Metal pieces is a bad sign, and you can assume its not going to last much longer.
If its an auto transmission its fairly safe mechanically, though you may end up stuck in the middle of the street somewhere if the diff locks up completely (happend to me once, fortunately as I was coming to a halt at the time - had it been on the motorway it could have been bad)
I'd say for your own safety though, and for the other drivers on the road, get it sorted sooner rather than later. Having said that I drove for several hundred km's knowing my diff was on the way out.

Thanks guys.
Yeah, no more hard launches I'd say. Time to take care of my baby. I'll be looking for a torsen lsd now.. or probably a supra differential. Money money money...
