Started car earlier tonight and notice a loud squeel that sounded like a loose fan belt. i drove for about 20 minutes then turned it off momentarily in a carpark waiting for my girlfriend. when she hopped in i turned the car on and it made the squeel again and a loud clunk.
as i took off i noticed that my power steering had suddenly stopped working. after about 30 seconds i got the Alternator not charging Battery message closely followed by the engine overheating message. my engine coolant was leaking/steaming my radiator was bubbling.
it is currently 2.30 in the morning and i have left the car in a carpark about 5min drive from my place. and going to pick up in the morning and need to know what i need to look out for. i just need to get the car home rather than it being towed. is it safe to do so or is it just not worth the risk?

You have snapped the serpentine belt...I would advise getting an new one before moving the car. It runs the water pump, alternator, power steering, and aircon. Water flowing around an engine is crucial at all times!

just grab a new belt from repco about $30 bucks, and take a 1/2" drive breaker bar. and your set just put it back on.. easy as, and look under the bonnet near the hinge pin there might be a diagram of how it goes around the pulleys cheers

yeah i have reciepts for the timing belt. checked it yesterday and it is the main belt. it hasnt snapped.. simply fallen off........
i checked what belt was on it and it is a 6pk1955 which should fit no? went to pick up a new one and was told it should be a 1940... does anyone know what belt it should actually have? it is strange because the belt that was on it is still in tact.. just really loose... unless the belt has stretched?

i would say that the wrong size was installed before, and it simply went out of adjustment. grab the tensioner and see of you can move it by hand if so it bugger, but most likely a larger belt was fitted, and it simply out of adjustment now. so get the right size and fit that. i cant remember what size i brought but i found it on the forum somewhere. i think it a 6pk1940 there about anyway. smaller is allways better. longer life hehe

yeah i got the 1940 and put it on.. it starts and spins fine just sounds like it is scraping on something... making the typical loose fanbelt noise.. im assuming that if i have the right belt and its still loose it is my tensioner.. the only thing being that the tensioner only has about 20mm to tighten before it will be hitting up against i think the power stearing gear..

wouldn hurt to take your serpintine belt off and just spin all your accessories by hand.. it wont tell you wat condition your p/s pump is in.. but you will be able to feel condition of bearings.. they all must spin smooth and free.. except your harmonic balancer.. if that spins easy u got serious issues
