I just did the water pump and timing belt replacement and everything went relatively smoothly for a first timer. But now the car idles smoothly, and drives as normal at low revs but as soon as I get it over about 4000rpm it starts to cough and fart and backfire. I've since read a tutorial on toymods about performing 100000km service. In it they mark the timing belt at three positions aligning with the timing marks on the crank and cams so that they can be sure that the timing is correct once re-assembled. Well I didn't do this (Doh!) but I don't think the timing is out because it idles and drives OK at low revs.
So, does anyone know if one of the cams were out by one cog on the timing belt would it be immediately obvious, or would it only be noticeable at high revs or under load?
The other possibility we are considering is the crank angle sensor may be faulty, but this would be a bit odd because the car was running perfectly before I pulled it apart.
There are no boost leaks, this was the first thing we looked for.
I am also getting the engine electrical error message on the dash. When we did the diagnostics it came up with ECT NG and EFI NG messages. I did a search here about these messages but couldn't find anything helpful. Does anyone know what they mean? We double checked all connections that we had to undo for the pull down.

What is the best way to work out which cog is out by one tooth? Logic says it's the crank (mates logic ) We lined up the harmonic balancer to TDC and the cam marks appeared to be in the correct positions. I will strip it back down tomorrow arv and see if we can re-align all timing marks.

Yup, one tooth out on the cams. All good now.
Anybody contemplating doing this job should read the following tutorial on the toy mods forum first. (I didn't find it till after the fact, would have saved a lot of time and a bit of angst)
If the link doesn't work you can search the Tech and Conversions threads for the following: "GUIDE timing belt and water pump replacement JZZ90 soarer 100000km service"

Hey I did the timing belt / water pump last week seemed to go smoothly I'm almost certain the timing is correct because the car drives as smoothly as before right through the rev range.
Every now and again at completely random times the lights on the dash light up always the same four and either disappear instantly or stay on for a few seconds.
The problem didn't happen until a few drives after I put everything back together, it was fine saturday sunday monday but today the lights started appearing occasionally. Does anyone know what this means?

Sorry guys ignore my post I double checked the bolt on the alternator wire...the one that fell off in my fingers, perhaps a reminder not to fix the car at night after a 12 hour shift

I just put in my soarer TT in for a 100000km service. Its going to cost me 1200 for the whole job. Do you think that is a fair price or am i getting ripped off!
