Hey all. changed the timing belt, idler and tensioner along with a lot of other things 2 weekends ago and sent it to a workshop to get tuned. They couldn't continue however because once warmed up and at high rpm's the timing belt is losing tension. I know that Gates lump the 1j and the 2j with the same belt and i am pretty sure that 2j's have a longer belt oem. Although I would have thought any slackness in the belt from a marginal size increase would have been caught by the tensioner. When we installed the tensioner, I did notice that the new item looked a bit different than the one I took out, although it fit perfectly with no dramas. Can anyone confirm in this pic that a new tensioner should look like this?

Gates list them as the same belts do they? I'm using a Dayco belt on the 2J and they list the 1J and 2J as two different parts. And according to the parts guys at Toyota, both the tensioner and the pulley are listed as different part numbers, so if Gates supplied you with a pulley with your belt kit, that could also be worth looking at.

The idler pulley and tensioner are oem Toyota for a 1jz, the belt is Gates. I think we'll try an oem belt. It's such a pain in the ass having to change this again.

Just swapped my old oem belt in and its running perfect now. I don't know if I got a dud belt or not, but definitely not risking getting a Gates belt again.
