Sounds like it's idling a bit slow.

Engine mounts or gearbox mount can do this.. Also the Harmonic balancers are known to crack and split the rubbers...

If it's not your harmonic balancer try adjusting the idle :-)

Whats this harmonic balancer everyone raves about??

Sounds like it's really important in keeping the 1J in harmony and not blowing up on me.

Where is it located?

harmonic balancer is at the bottom of your engine ! it is wheel that drives all your belt relation like alternator , fan etc . direct drive from the crank shaft so its important to make sure it's balance it's a wheel so even our wheel tyre need balance. when get old it can tent to apart as two piece construction, hold together by a rubber layer. when rubber gets crack it will slowly shake it's way out! vibration from this makes the big end or main bearing stress as vibration takes away stableness !!you want the bearing to last as long as you can. trust me! if it comes off! your water pump will take the day off and the alternator will stay out of jail and not be charge! this leads to a tow truck. but if you're lucky your belt may be save . smoothness is the best at 7000rpm so lookout for harmonic balance is easy fixing from outside don't make it an inside job! for the ones that love your 1jz you might just do water pump and timing belt as you there at the party you re going not there everyday!or every year !!

The harmonic balancer is the big round thing at the bottom of your engine, inline with your crank-shaft that keeps all things running nice and dandy and balanced (funny that!!).
It has a metal casing, but the middle of it is hard rubber, this rubber can split and fail, causing the inside of the harmonic balancer to turn out of "harmony" with the outer metal part that drives the belts.

So these rubber bushings on the middle of the harmonic balancer can be replaced?

Easy job for backyard mechanic to change the rubber bushing? Or needs to go to a workshop to get properly balanced?

You have to replace the harmonic balancer. It's a manufactured part and can't be repaired.

It's theoretically a simple job to replace it, but in reality they aren't that easy to get off due to the nut holding them on being done up so tight.

There have been some good threads on this recently, have a look.
