i am thinking of upgrading to a single turbo and i was wondering what is the maximum boost you could go on a stock motor without doing any damage to it???. and/or what turbo would anyone recommend, as i don't know much about these motors as yet??

Stick with any Garret 30 series mate... Either the GT 3076R or the GT3037...

I have seen a decent setup with the 3076R 0.86 rear housing make over 300rwkw on 24psi on a stock 1J on Pump 100 shell fuel. With excellent boost response.

Make sure you buy a GOOD brand wastegate also when you start this single turbo mission.

Tial is always a good option. Avoid justjap (crap) ones or JJR as they say.
