I'm trying to change my oil & filter again but am not getting all of the oil out.
My mechanic told me there's a bit of oil sludge in the engine and it needs flushing so I've been trying quick filter replacements.
I replaced the filter about 4 weeks ago but only got about 3L of oil out. The car's not been running as well as it did (seems heavy and takes a lot longer to warm up), not sure if that was because of changing the oil to 5w40 (they didn't have 10w30).
Have tried to change the filter and oil again but have only got about 1.5L out this time, including out of the filter.
Seems obvious that there's a blockage somewhere, any ideas where to start? Had thought of using a flush, but that sounds like it'd be a bad idea.

After changing the first filter I think I put in about 3L of oil.
After draining what little I got out this time I've put a bit more in (was hoping it'd help flush some out).
The dipstick is above the full mark now.
Guess the sump's coming off then. From what I could see through the hole in the top (where you put the oil in, dunno it's proper name) it looks pretty clean - a lot cleaner than I was expecting at least.

Spencer, I have some bad new for you, there is not enough room to get the tin sump off the engine with the engine in the car, I tried to do this a week ago, when you undo it all and drop it, there is only about 2 inches of room to work with at he back of the sump, if you have a hoist and very small hands you might get in there, but I could not. Sorry mate best of luck

Yeah I'm pouring from the oil pan into a 2L milk bottle and half filling it. There's a bit of spillage from taking the filter off, but that'd only be 0.5L or so I'd guess.
Dipstick seems to be the right length too. It's very weird

so let's get this straight... you take oil out of the trans(which is red/clear in colour, you change the engine oil filter(full of BLACK dirty oil) and then you put more oil in the engine(making it way overfull) and then drive it- with no oil in the trans, and twice as much oil in the engine?????? is this what happened? truly?

Yeah yeah I'm an idiot, thanks for the confirmation!
The ATF was well overdue as well so it was coming out black too. Obviously if it was red I'd have known i was doing it wrong straight away.
There was still trans fluid in there after the first attempt, but was getting low - hence the slow shifting. And I hadn't kept pouring more and more oil into the engine, I at least know how to read a dipstick - it was a little overfull, not much. So not quite as bad as Blake makes it sound!

and you are really funny, owning up in the manner you did. "looks like i'm the dipstick" was a real pearler.your trans will be loving the fresh oil.a real shame the previous owner never changed it.

Lucky you did that, if the engine oil was only a little overfull after pouring all that extra oil in there, there musn't have been too much oil in the engine in the first place!
Good old backyard mechanics, gotta love our work! I once wondered why I couldn't get my cam covers off whilst leaving the coilpacks bloted on

well I'm glad to have given you all a good laugh then!
Was at least a good learning exercise, you get to investigate lots of things looking for blocked engine sumps.
Good news is I took her out for a nice long drive today and she's running great! Stay tuned for the 100K service that's coming up... ...though I might invest in someone who knows what the hell they're doing for that one!!

This thread is f**king awesome The thought of a DIY 100k service for you is even funnier, your next thread will be "My serpentine belt wont fit over my cam gears, please help!" hahahahahahahahhhahaa.
I love it though, least you had the balls to own up, I would have preferred to throw my PC out the window instead. Good work mate.

Many years ago (before I met her), my wife decided to fill up the oil on her Levin.
So she filled it up - she was very surprised at how much it took to fill it - litre after litre after litre.
Unfortunately she had never heard of a dipstick so when she filled it up, she just kept pouring oil into the oil filler until it was literally full, that is to the top of the oil filler.
Yes, the whole engine was full of oil, chocka block!
Unsurprisingly after she started it, it ran for only a few minutes before dying in a cloud of smoke.
Luckily it was all fixed simply draining the excess oil.
Anyway, everyones done silly stuff at some stage while they are learning, so don't feel too bad!

I guess people with no car knowledge were only thinking logically, as in to fill the oil, you fill it up to the top like any thing that holds a fluid!
Unfortunately it goes to show they have absolutely no idea with what they are dealing with, still cant blame them if they have never been interested in it or been educated about it over the years!
