I have a 'clunk' coming from the area near the drivers footwell in my car. It occurs when there is a change of direction or weight shift in the car, ie gentle undulations. I can feel the clunk through the accelerator pedal as well.

I first thought the LCA's might be worn out but no amount of jacking, prodding, banging etc could help find the noise, or any visibly ruined bushes.

I am now wondering if it could be the engine mount(s)? I used a jack under the gear box to take some load off the mounts and there seemed to be quite a bit of movement in the drivers side mount, about 6-8mm. I will try and get in there with some light and get a picture.

Any thoughts???

It's possible, my old GT4 made almighty clunks when releasing the clutch when revving a bit. Turns out the engine mounts were screwed.
After getting them replaced, all was as good as new :-)

OK. So I got some light on the situation and believe my drivers side engine mount is stuffed. This may or may not be the source of my clunk, but I guess they need replacing.

Ben, also fire an email off to
Parts@billbuckle.com.au, tell them Brian sent you, and give them Castle Hill's price, and I am sure they will beat it ;)

BTW, if you want 2nd hand, my engine mounts are in good condition, and pickup is available anytime (need to take them off the car).

Iv'e already organised with CHT. $85 each for both Soarer and Supra OEM mounts. I'll probably stick with the soarer ones as the set in there lasted 102000km/15 years(as James kindly pointed out).

I am not totally convinced it is the engine mounts making the clunk. Getting on and off the throttle I can't replicate the noise. Neither does depressing and releasing the clutch.

I can definitely feel it through the accelerator pedal as the car moves over undulations in the road surface.

Is there any sure fire ways to check the LCA/UCA bushes? I have tried to load and unload the wish bone with a jack but couldn't detect any real movement.

Ben

I had a clunk when I pressed the brakes or driving through round abouts. My mechanic tightened the subframe bolts and that fixed the clunk. I it helps

Cheers mate. I'll check em all when I'm under there doing the engine mounts.

I got a bad feeling this is going to be one of those dramas that I'm going to spend hours looking for, and when I find it it will be obvious.
I've had the wheels off that many times in the last week I feel like a pit crew man.

Check the gearbox mount and that the exhaust isn't floating around.

Righto.

I have replaced both the engine mounts. The passenger (left) one was good but I replaced it anyway. $85 each side. The gearbox mount is fine. The subframe bolts (and just about any bolt I could get at) is tight- they weren't loose. The exhaust is where it has always been and would have to swing a long way to hit anything.

I will go for a drive once the missus gets home and see if the noise is gone. Fingers crossed.

Ben, what torque setting did you end up using? I am just about to replace my engine mounts.

I couldn't get an answer from anyone on here so I did em up "tight".

I set the torque wrench to 25Nm and checked them but they were probably way past that.

The SC300 Lexus manual states "Tighten the bolts to 19ft.lbs(25Nm) and the nuts to 10ft.lbs(14Nm)"

They were bloody tight to get off.

Ben, did you ever find out what was causing the clunk? I've got the exact same problem - but my engine mounts are less than 2 years old.

That clunk was indeed the engine mounts. I had a similar clunk developing this year and that was the LCA bush. I swapped another pair of second hand arms in, but will have to buy new bushes sooner or later as it is developing again.

This clunk was characterised by a large clunk on the first brake application after reversing out of my driveway. Also happened on hard brake applications or slow gentle weight shifts like crawling into a driveway.
