I am about to buy a TT 92 soarer with 66,000 on it.
I am wondering about the turbos, generally how long do these turbos last with moderate driving etc, the car has never been hammered and has been owned by a mature owner most of its life.
What Causes the turbos to fail? The car will be kept on standard boost. Can i expect a good 20,000km more out of them? It will only be driven nicely, treated good with the odd booting.

Are you 100% on this?
Also i would be careful about relying on the 66,000ks as it may not be correct. Best to go by the engine and interior condition to make sure the ks are genuine.
If the boost is keep to stock they will last heaps longer as long as you care for the car, and change the oil regularly.

yes, i am a mechanic by trade, well 2nd year apprentice. I always change oils on time like a religion. I realise air filtration with turbo cars is critical.
The owner is a trusted source, he bought the car for his wife 7 years ago but she prefers her other car. The engine bay looks immaculate, no oil leaks anywhere. Hes a 50+ year old owner who treats his cars well.
Its a 92 TT fully optioned car, manual transmission, sunroof, Electronic suspension, leather interior, 12 stacker CD player, factory body kit, and front mount intercooler, as he thought the side mount was insufficient. Turbos dont make any noise and when he started it it didn't show any sign of smoke.

the car was full leather, the seats were that suede? Type material, but he got it all retrimmed in the grey leather, WISH it was all black, that would be killer, the grey is a bit bland but i can get used to it i guess
So i should be good right? If i treat it right, keep it standard boosted and service it myself every 5K and keep on top of the airfilter i should be good hey?
Quick question, how much more power would a large front mount intercooler add? I know it wouldnt be alot, probably max of 3kw but its quite a big sucker, but you cant notice it which is nice

Turbos can last a long time if warmed up, cooled down and oil changes done religiously on time... My car is showing 168,000kms and has been nrunning 17+psi ( up to 20 ) for the last 40,000kms with no issues thus far ! However, i change oil every 3-4000kms ! I see it as cheap insurance
There is no telling when they will go, some people blow em at 9psi, others at 15psi !

yeah, i guess its just the luck of the draw.
I shook hands tonight on the deal, cant wait.
I found out a bit more about it, its a 92 TT LE version with a factory manual trasnmission, bomex body kit, front mount intercooler, and Greddy BOV and boost guage, thats about it. He uses Mobile 1 fully synthetic oil in it and changes it regularely.
Cant wait to recieve it, such a nice car, and such low KMs at only 66,000

to put it simply, he cant hammer it, about 6 months after he bougjht it he had to have a knee reconstruction, in this time the soarer was put in a garage for 4 years up on blocks, as the heavy duty clutch he couldnt use. His wife has been driving it around for the few years it has been registered again.
It came with the body kit, the intercooler he installed because he thought the standard to be insufficient and the boost guage was to ensure the standard turbos didnt have any large boost spikes which could quite literally destroy them lol.
Either way, even if it has been driven hard sometimes, its in great nick. Will truly find out 6 months down the track if anything goes wrong

As long as everything is pretty sound, I wouldn't worry to much about the turbos blowing as they are not that hard to get second hand off this site or eBay or a wreckers. And by the time they blow you will probably want more power anyway..........big single

i wont be able to afford a single anytime soon.
Whats needed for a good single conversion? Single turbo, single manifold, dump pipe, inlet piping etc. What else is needed? Id assume a adjustable computer is needed as well?

Probably a loose heat shield around the turbos or could even be coming from the exhaust underneath. Check all the heat shields arent loose before lookin at the turbos.

thanks, il have a look around, i get a rattle under load from under the car, thinking maybe the exhaust is to stiff on its mountings or maybe the cat is starting to brake apart. It may even be that. Next time i get a chance at work il throw it on the hoist. Didnt have a chance when i serviced it as was running late haha
