hi all just done my minor service today and gave my engine a compression test, the first 4 cylinders stay around 140-145 and the second last cylinder was at 125 and the last cylinder was 160, does anyone know what sort of problem could be? thanks

Maybe your turtle fell into cylinder 5? If a wet and dry test was done and it differed after the wet test, usually rings ...

could it be a crack in the head gasket?

quite possibly, but the first 4 cylinders are quite low as well. Average should be up around the 170 mark. Id say either the motor has been overheated before and the rings have lost some of there tension, allowing compression to seep past easily. Do you notice any bubbles within the coolant when the motor is at temp? Run the motor until its warmed up and watch the coolant in the radiator cap, regular bubbles indicates a possible headgasket. How does it run?

perform a leak down test and you will see where the problems lie.

Hehe, mine died an exact same death, on the 5th cylinder. I got it comp tested, wet and dry. Didnt bother with the leak down, it was creating a miss in the tune so i pulled it out and fitted a 1.5JZ. The old 1j had the same results. Rings fubar.

i am not sure what is wet and dry test. what they done to my car was they took out the spark plugs and the coil packs and using the comp meter, they put the meter in each cylinder and start the engine one by one. another problem is my heater is not in 100% working condition, my mechanic guess that it might be the engine head problem.

Sometimes its just the fuel from the last injection cycle that didn't burn pumping up the results in one or two cylinders. Best to remove all plugs, crank for 10 seconds then test each cylinder.

is anyone else aware that no.5 and sometimes no.6 cylinders run the leanest of the lot on 1j's? i read a huge article on the 1JZ's ages ago and it said that due to a somewhat poorly designed inlet manifold the last 2 cylinders will always wear out or burn out before the others. how many km's has the engine done?

it displayed 140000km. im not really sure what is the really km the engine has done, because is import from Jap. most dealer change the kms before the car arrived to Aus.

the only problem there is that the problem may not lie in the head, like everyone has said, its quite possible, and most likely that the rings have lost tension and are leaking compression. That would explain the low reading on most of the cylinders. If thats the case, its a motor out job and rebuild time.

Is the car actually running badly ?? ie rough or down on power ? Before you do anything you need to do a second comp test, to re confirm the readings & also then do a wet test to see if the readings increase substantially & if they do its more than just a head rebuild .. I would be going to another Mechanic personally, because what the hell has a down comp motor ? got to do with the heater not working properly as you stated earlier that your Mechanic had said ... ( As you have not mentioned anything about the car going through radiator coolant the low comp is unrelated to the heater ) ..

the car still running. i can see the car blowing smoke only if the rpm reving to 4000rpm or higher(that's probably my turbo got some play in shaft),for daily driving i change gear at about 2500rpm,the car doesn't blow smokes. any place in melb could fount out the problem of my car? or just local mechanic can do the job for me? heaps thanks

If you are happy with how the car is running & don't want more power, then why spend more money at the moment .. If you want to make it better be prepared to spend some thousands ..

if you have another car, then its a good idea to pull it out yourself. Its really not that dounting, get some sticky labels and label each wire etc as you remove them, then when you reinstall its just a matter of matching up your wires. Makes it SO much easier than trying to figure out where those bunch of wires over there go HAHA. If you can get yourself a engine hoist, and better yet if you know someone with a car hoist as well, you will have the motor out in a good 8 hours for a first time. Then remove accesories and take it to a workshop if you feel you dont have the skills to rebuild the internals. It really isnt that hard, its just a bunch of parts bolted together, think of it as a jiggsaw puzzle, but you get to take it apart first, and label things which makes it so much easier haha.
