I just changed my harmonic balancer and accessory belt and i've developed some problems. I didn't touch any of the other timing gear. The only thing i can note that may be of relevance is that i probably didn't tighten it up to 300nm (the crank bolt that is), i don't know how much i did but certainly not that much.
-The car now idles very low, sometimes down to 400rpm. Mostly around 600rpm. I guess could be explained by a reset.
-When accelerating, the revs aren't steady and bounce up and down around 200rpm, happens very fast probably more than once a second.
-I cannot get it to go past ~2200rpm, regardless if i floor it or slowly try to pass it. It simply just bounces back to about ~1600rpm as soon as i try to, unless it changes gears first.
First time i turned on aircon, the revs didn't change at all. Second time, i tried it went up about 1000rpm. Normally it's more than this if i remember right.
I've tried resetting and then fuel pump bypass (FP to B+), but made no difference.
Checked spark plugs and they all seem to be plugged in right.
I drove around for probably a good 20 minutes and it's still the same.
Smells pretty rich even though the cars warmed up.
But the fact that it doesn't go past 2200 is really strange.

I had done a bit of searching, and these symptoms seem fairly consistent with an error 41 (throttle position sensor) Unfortunately, my lower dash isn't working atm so i'm not able to check error codes.
I tried unplugging them both and it made no difference, exact same problem.

take the harmonic balancer off again.
from memory it goes something similar to this. there's a little metal tab that's held in by a allen key bolt you need to take off (highlighted in black)
but the spikey cog sits infront of the pulley that holds the bottom of the timing belt.
but just have a look and make sure its not bent, or come off

The plate with the holes in it is fine, it is allowed to move until it gets sandwiched when you bolt on the harmonic balancer .. The plate is just a guide for the timing belt so it doesn't run ofF the crank gear ..

Sorry Rob its a bit more than that it sends pulses via sensor with is above the plate the points on the plate run passed a sensor so at any time the ECU knows were the crank is (crank angle)

Dave, you are getting confused a bit, there is a star wheel behind the crank gear that does the work that you mention .. The front one we were talking about earlier only does what i mentioned in that it stops the belt from running off ..
All this talk still doesn't explain the initial problem though, the best way is to get the fault codes out of the computer ( Matchy you will need to get your dash fixed ) but you can also with a bit of stuffing around tap into the computer wiring & get the codes off the signal trouble code wire with a LED test light ..

Alright, thanks for all your help guys. I finally figured it out, and it was the smallest thing ever. Which goes to show, anything and everything can really stuff you up.
It was the wiring going into the second coilpack from the front, the blue one had somehow worked itself out of the connector.
This explains the lumpyness. So anyway, all fixed. I'm off to get some new connectors. Mine seem very brittle.
