ok I'll try getting to the thermostat housing from the bottom.
Put the shroud back and tested the car with A/C on while in idle, got the temp up to 94C and then gave it a few good long revs and it stayed around 94 - 96C so looking better but will have to get a proper test when it's a bit warmer.

The first pic is of te air con condensor, that wont effect ANYTHING
The reason its not starting is vapour lock in the fuel system. I also found that with my fuel pump ecu issues (very common) that it was worse on hot days.
Heat shielding the fuel lines will help, and a new walbro WILL fix that issue.
I know exactly what your talking about with shutting it down, and it getting hotter. Even sitting still the temp rises, only people with an aftermarket gauge should comment on this, as the stock gauge is woeful at best
I found I would run at say 90 deg cruising, stop get out come back and im on 110, and as said, after 5 mins of driving its back to 90deg.
This is why turbo timers are BAD. How many times have you actually heard of a turbo dieing from not turbo timing? Never, thats right. BUT... You are better off taking the last 2 mins really easy on the motor and then parking. You wont agree UNTILL YOU BUY SOME GAUGES, get an oil and water temp gauge and you'll see what Im talking about
Another bandaid fix for your problem is buy and oilcooler kit, worth it IMO, but its $300 you might not have to spend.
IF it was my car, iw ould lock the factory thermo fan up with about 50 zip ties, and see what happens. my bet is its better. Just keep applying them till the fan is 100% locked and not spinning on its own,
The other test for the fan is get the car really hot, like you are, pop the bonnet and see if the fan spins, if its free as a kite than thats your problem, but if its really stiff then your fan is actually working how it should

wouldn't it just be easier/safer to take the thermofan off

Andrew I was led to believe the Toyota Fan is the EXACT Opposite champ !
WHen the SOarer hub fails it Locks, thats why some of them lockup and never release ??? They stay locked on and make a loud whoooshing noise when failing .

Ok guys thanks for the tips. I have a aftermarket thermo and it's bloody noisy and I have changed my fan clutch so that's fin too. After putting the shroud back on it seems to be fine. I took it for a drive the other day chucked the A/C on and booted it for a bit after it got to temp and the guage stayed around 95C - 97C which is good IMO. Though it was only about 30C that day. I will try and shield the fuel line to stop it vapourising.
