I have finally decided to purchase a gt3582 along with one of Kyles manifolds to get my single turbo project started, I should get it by next week. Also on order is one of Cams 1.5 shift kits, Thanks to all of you for your comments on turbo size etc, ill let you all know how I go with it. Ben

Hey people, We started the turbo conversion yesterday, although im still waiting for my manifold and turbo to show up. Took about 5 hours to remove the twins yesterday and installed one of cams shift kits today. Took about 3 hours taking it easy.
Just a question about installing an engine oil cooler... Can I use one of the feed lines and one of the oil drains to install an oil cooler? OR is it better to get the sandwich plate and run it from the filter?

ok, that will work good then because il put the trans cooler on the rhs of the intercooler and the oil cooler on the lhs of the intercooler. Fun Fun Fun

Just wondering about what to do with the water line that used to feed the twins. (the pipe that runs under the manifold.) Do I leave it there and block the water nipples close to the firewall or do I remove the pipe altogether ?

Ben; Don't remove that big line It feeds the cooling for the filter. Just grab some 10mm water blanking plugs and block them off. You can get them from a Bursons store thay come in packs of 2 for about $4 then block of the back one and also 1 of the top ones. Generaly i block off the one closes to the turbo (top water feeds) just so you can run the 4" pod tube past it easier. Also mate when you fit the engine cooler are you doing a relocation for the filter as well? Just one more thing mate If you are using stainless braided lines for any thing Make sure the stainless doesn't rub against any thing metalic it is like a razor blade and will stuff it very quickly.

Turbo and manifold turned up today, but some bad news for me also. The manifold does not fit because it hits my steering box I need to speak to kyle and see if he can do some mods for me. Hopefully it can be done with the 6boost manifold

Yer, 1j is already in the merc but just doing the turbo conversion at the moment. What a headache!
I managed to get the manifold to fit but is about 10mm away from my steering box. Because its so close, I plan to get the manifold ceramic coated and Ill make up some heat shielding. Will the heat produced by one of the runners damage my steering box after I do all this? Would it help installing a "power steering oil cooler?"
The bottom of the manifold get quite close to the engine mount bracket and rubber engine mount, If I install a heat shield there also, will the rubber mount be ok?
Also, I have to modify my thermostat housing\pipe as it hits the manifold. I thought these manifolds were bolt on with no mods (in a soarer)

Im having trouble finding the space to install my ext wastegate in the engine bay near the turbo. Would it effect the performance if I installed the wastegate under the car away from the turbo\manifold? Say aprox 500mm away?

Hi Ben, sounds like a interesting conversion do you have any photos ..
As far as putting the wastegate further away i think you might at times get boost spike issues ? my thoughts .. Better of talking to a turbo guy probably ..

Well the single turbz is finally installed and I got the new 3inch exhaust done today. Any one know how to hook up the vacume lines on the wastegate? I have two vacume points on the wastegate, One seems to be above the diaphram and the other seems to be below the vacume line. Also, with no vacume lines connected to the wastegate, is it normal for it to be slightly open (allowing exhaust gassed to pass only slightly)

the wastegate should seal perfectly like a valve in a cylinder head. Otherwise it will just be leaking exhaust pressure straight through the exhaust bypassing the turbine, which will mean slower spool up and reduced boost pressure

Ok thanks cam.
If I were to install a hi stall, would this make the car easyer to control? eg From my initial tests and as im not used to the car yet, im a bit cautious because once power\boost comes on, (im probably doing 60k's at this stage) then the car goes sideways. Its like no power. no power no power then POWER\SIDEWAYS....... This is on about 10psi, I expect to make much more power than this once the car is fully tuned. Also when i install my new diff which is much shorter, will it change the way the car spools up and handles. By installing larger cams, will it make bottom end heaps worse? By the way the shift kit is working well.

I am having the same issue in my soarer at the moment mate. Have you tuned your merc?
I just put a large single on mine and when it comes on boost it just leaves doubles down the road. Thats at only 10psi so I cant imagine what it will be like at 22psi when I am finished.
me thinks its time to invest in some semi slicks haha

Hey BEN my mates got a C180 Kompressor and being the piece of slow crap that it is. Id love to find out what you did to get the 1JZ working in the merc. Hes been wanting to power it up for a while now, but nothing is really feasible except for an engine conversion.

Ben, Great project mate, complimenting purchases that'll surprise you more and more as the boost goes up im sure!
If you're sticking with this turbo, i would leave the standard camshafts in place as they're more than capable of maxing this turbo out with no ill effects. That money is better spent on a sturdy fuel system + good management and tuning.
