just did some searching think it might be the starter motor. all electrics are good (dash, lights, system) but there is no noise when you turn it to start. any way to tell if it is definately the starter motor ?? i started about 15 mins before i went to start it again but then NOTHING. completely stumped

Sounds like the starter motor, solenoid or possibly an earthing problem. In a TT, since its pretty easy to get at the starter, I'd say take it out and get it tested/serviced.

That's exactly what happens when the battery is dead. Test the battery first with a mutlimeter. Maybe even try a jump start. Some batteries need a good charge initially & perhaps you didn't get the chance to do this?

Yeh could be the solinoid.
If you get under the car just have a look up at it and check that they earth (or is it power?) strap is attached still with the nut holding it on. That could be your drama.
Otherwise, give the starter motor a bit of a bash with something and then try again. Seemed to work with one of my older cars.

i'd do what james said.
get a mate to try and turn the car over while you give the starter motor a tap with a hammer or something (be careful under there when you do it so nothing takes your head or arm off)
you could also remove the starter motor. and open it up. there's normally 2 copper contacts down the bottom that some times get worn and stop making a good connection and your car wont start.
really easy to replace and cost's about $10 from an auto electriction.

hey just found out it was the starter motor. my mate jacked it up and slammed it from underneath with a hammer and it starts... for now. would it be better to get the starter motor reconditioned or to just buy a new one ??

pull the bastard off an have a look inside like i suggested nathan.
theres a decent chance that what i said is all that is wrong with it and it beats paying a mechanic $200 or more to do the same thing and call it a "reconditioning"

Reconditioning is going to be cheaper, but you can't beat new if you have the $$$. I've never had an issue with a reconditioned starter motor and I've had a few done over the years.

I was not implying anything of the sort, next time don't put up "Please Help" if you don't want it!
I was not saying that you had not put the shifter in park I was referring to the park not engaging.I am pretty sure there is a switch either in the shifter or connected to the Transmission that stops the starter from Engaging if not in park. If the switch is not working properly then it will act exactly the same as you described. It was very common with Old Sigmas and Camiras where you had to move the shifter up and down to get the starter to engage. If it was a problem with the starter you would usually here a click but the fact your not getting anything at all may also be the solenoid

The Neutral Start Switch Rob is referring to is located on the drivers side of the Tranny, this switch will allow the car to start in "Park" as well as "Neutral". If it is not setup correctly the car won't crank or if the adjustment has come loose it won't start.

nathan did you check inside your old one when you removed it (or did you pay to have it installed)
there's three screws on top you take off. inside there's a plunger kinda thing its a bit off copper on a spring. you pull that out and you'll see to copper clips.
those are probably all that needed replacing. and they only cost about $5 or so and to get them out you need to take off 2 bolts. and you just give the copper plunger bit a bit of a fine sanding to clean it up

Hey James, first time being on for a while and I just saw your comment about "OUR FRIEND FROM THE BAHAMAS." I'm sorry if I offended you guys. It's been so long now since I have been a member of SC and noone ever said anything to me about it. But it does get you guys attention right?
