Hey guys, I've done a search on here for the problems my car is having. It's a 1991 Toyota Soarer with the 1jz twin turbo motor in it. It's auto. It runs a constant 10 pounds of boost and it has an exhaust system.
Now it's having a few problems. Sometimes while i'm driving along it will suddenly go into limp mode. It will start farfting, not revving, stalling, it wont make any boost. While other times it'll be fine. I've tried a new ignitor pack but it doesn't seem to have helped. I'm getting two warning lights. 1 says 'Engine Electrical System' and the other says 'Engine oil level'. I've checked my oil level and it's full, I've used the translations from this site to figure out what the japanese warnings said. Also when it stalls it'll sometimes come up with 'Alternator not charging the battery'. I'm getting hold of a ECU to try on thursday or so but i'd also like some ideas from what other people had to fix to iron out these problems.

your 02 sensor wiring is faulty.need to replace the sensor. unplug the wiring plug to the sensor and then take it for a drive to test this theory. It wont hurt it. you will find the plug directly below the front turbo.

Im not so sure about it being the sensor as mine is screwed and all I had was poor idle on warm up and crap fuel economy, not stalling or farting or not making any boost. You still make boost even if your 02 sensor is rooted, it just runs and overfuels. ECU could be a good bet, try unhooking your battery for 15 minutes to try reset the computer first, see if there is any changes from that before ripping out your ECU.

Well I finally got hold of an ECU today to try. Threw it on and it came up with different warnings. while idling the dash would dim and scroll up "CHECK SYSTEM" then very quickly flash "CHARGE". But when you start to rev it it would stop. Now my Catalyic Converter Light has now come on. It's also dropped a cyclinder. So i'm gonna change the plugs tomorrow. I'm assuming it's running in Limp mode cause it won't rev past 3,000 rpm. What's everyones take on this?

I would say its your Map sensor for sure. It could be damaged or it may have just blown the hose off. This would cause it to idle poorly and not make boost. The map sensor is located on the firewall behind the intake manifold and runs a vacuum line between cam cover and intake manifold.

Well I went out to the Soarer today not expecting much, maybe just a tinker and a tyre kick. But i've managed to get it running right. Rev's to red line, run's smooth and only two errors now! I'm still getting "Alternator not charging Battery" and "Engine electrical system". I took the coil pack cover off to discover 3 of my coil pack plugs were cracked and not making much contact with the coil packs. Did the best I could and put them all on properly. It then ran smooth and makes boost and goes to redline. However the catalyic converter light is still on. I've tried a known working ecu and my ecu and they both have the same error messages and don't make a difference. Any idea's from where to go now?

the CAT light could be a faulty sensor underneath ? Or its been cut off if its got an aftermarket system made and is earthing on the body under somewhere ?

The cat light and alternator not charging warning coming on at the same time can mean your alternator is stuffed. Well that's what happened to me anyway.
