so recently my speedo stopped working and i managed to find out the plastic cog that connects to the speedo sensor was worn/stuffed.

so i tracked down another (2nd had but it good nick) and popped that in and everything was fine for a while.

but driving to work today my speedo cut out and i started to get the ECT and o/d warning, gear changes where still fine and everything.

so i got home today and pulled out the cog and it looks pretty worn again??

so i'll track down a brand new one through toyota in the next couple of days. but what could be causing the cogs to wear down so quick. they should last longer then a couple of months.

what does that cog mount to inside the gear box? could that be causing it and how do i replace it?

any info would be greatly appreciated.

forgot i had this thread a while back when it first stuffed up.

old mate mentions changing the DRIVE cog that turns the plastic bit on the speedo sensor. anyone know how to replace this?

yeah last time i replaced the cog i also got a speedo sensor as well.

but just got this pm about the DRIVE COG:

I've never done the job meself, but Neil Griffiths told me that you have to drop the drive shaft, then remove the rear trans housing (after removing the trans cross member).
Then you'll see the cog on the output shaft of the trans.
It's held on by a circlip..................Remove circlip, and the cog will slide off the shaft (may need a tap or two with a small hammer), then install NEW cog, and reverse the procedure :-)

Neil said that the reason WHY the DRIVEN cog wears, is that the DRIVE cog gets rusty as there is no oil in that part of the trans..............So consequently, the rust build up on the DRIVE cog acts like a grinder on the (relatively) soft nylon DRIVEN cog.

To save bucks, you could carefully sand the teeth on your existing drive cog (wet and dry type sandpaper), and all will be fine again.

Hope this helps :-)

ok everyone bit of a thread revival. but i've managed to get all the necessary transmission parts off to get at the speedo drive

i managed to get the circlip off by shimmying it up the out put shaft. i replaced the rusty cog with a fresh one

but i'm having a lot of trouble getting the circlip back on.

does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this. i've tried using two sets of pliers at the same time but to no avail. is there some sort of trick to it?
