Hi guys, my Soarer TT is due for an oil change very soon. Is there any harm in delaying the oil filter change to 10,000kms rather than at every 5,000km oil change? The reason I ask is that I don't think there is any way I can reach the oil filter from the top of the engine bay.

Its recommended to change it at 5,000km's . Personally with turbos i wouldnt stretch it. If it was the wifes Hyundai, it would wait till 10,000 .

I drop my oil every 3-5000kms . 3k if raced alot, 5k if all freeway driving and no racing .

Change the oil. Easy to get from underneath .

Yeah I really don't want to stretch it out to 10,000km if I can avoid it. On the other hand, the oil filter on my old Camry looked like it hadn't been changed in about 50,000kms (bought it like that), lots of black sandy on the inside of it. Do you take the front left wheel off to get to it Daniel? Thats what I was going to do.

for the amount of money you pay for a new oil filter there really is no reason NOT to change it hey.

Yeh it can be a bit of a pain in the bum but normally only if the person before you did it up really tight !

Once you figure out how to do it once, you will sail through it the other times.

Replace it with one like the Drift brand oil filter as it has a nut on top which makes changing the filter a lot easier next time.

do it from underneath, a hoist makes it a 2 second job :-), just buy some car ramps and a creeper, its always handy to have around, slide under, and undo the filter. Makes life much easier.

Ramps won't fit under the front of mine cos its too low, and I don't have access to a hoist (I wish). A filter relocation kit is starting to look like a good investment

ah, a jack and jackstands? hehe.

But yeah, i wouldnt let your service period go beyond 5000km, turbo cars basically superheat the oil when it passes through the bearings, cooks the molecular structure of the oil and all the additives that keep your motor clean and running smooth.

Its easy to say when you have access to a hoist i know, but for the health of your car and trouble free operation, bear with the pain and do it, saves quite a few hassles later down the track

Might be worthwhile visiting a local mechanic and askin him how much he would charge to chuck it on a hoist just to change the filter ?

Mine wouldn't get up a ramp either so I made a pre ramp out of railway sleepers. I got the ramps off ebay for $30 and the railway sleeper for $10. They have paid for themselves 20 times over in saved labour costs.

Normally I take it to Neil for all servicing, but I've left it a bit late this time so I'm gonna do it when I have free time in the next few days. One way or another I'm gonna get to this bloody filter, thanks for the suggestions guys.

It's not that hard too change the filter, as mentioned once its off buy a drift brand or similar that has a nut attached to the top of the filter so next time you need to change it all you need is a 14mm socket with extension and you can do it easily from the top.

Get yourself two 1.5 metre lengths of 6x2 inch hardwood. Extend your ramps and it all becomes very easy to work on the car.

Alternatively, I have relocated the filter to inside the chassis rail near the gearbox on the race car. Very easy to change the filter now. Just reach under and unscrew it.

James, listen to Scott. Turbos run at very, very high temperatures (about 1,000 deg on full boost) and the oil that passes through them to cool them just gets fried. Fried!

If you don't bite the bullet and change your oil every 5,000k, it won't be long before you're sending your turbos off for an overhaul. And believe me, THEN you will really have some work to do. Difficult, fiddly, time-consuming and costly work.

Anyone have a part number for the Drift oil filter please. Mine is also due for a change.

Barry, I use K&N oil filter on my car. It has a 1 inch nut on the end and makes it easy to install remove :-)

I just got an oil filter relocator kit but I'm having trouble finding somewhere to mount the filter holder bit.

Does anybody have pics of their setups?

Or just describe where you've put it.

Cheers

I have mine sitting down under the passenger seat next to the gearbox. Makes oil changes a breeze- just put your tray under the filter and undo it by hand. Nothing to spill oil on.

I have a picture...somewhere.

easy way i find to get our oil filters off is to:

get a long wide flat head screw driver, tap a dint in it on the face near the edge with out puncturing it.

then turn the screw driver and hit it in the direction it turns. if you puncture it dont worry unless you plan on re using it.

another thing to try is you can buy in $2 shops these grippy mats used to help get tight jar lids off. make a great tool for taking off and putting back on. helps get it just that little bit tighter with your hands

Cheers Ben

Is that on your track car?

I ended up mounting the filter holder on the cross-member next to the transmission. It's not quite as accessible as yours, but I would be just a little concerned about the hoses being so exposed and close to the road. My hoses are rubber, not braided lines. I will be getting some braided lines made up soonish.

I've still got to jack the car up to change the filter, but I've got to jack it up anyway to get to the drain plug.

I'll try to get some pics to put up. Bit hard to take photos as you go as it's a messy job.

Oh, yeah. It's a Perma-Cool kit from Autobarn. Didn't come with a cooler, but could be fitted if you want one. They sold me a Z9 filter to go with it, but it fits the standard Z418 filter too.

Cost around the $150 mark.

It is either fixed using tech screws, or I bolted it through the floor. I can't remember. I need to get out there and find the problem with the car soon so I can have a good look then.

Walter Gillmore wrote on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 - 07:28 pm:

I actually made that one. I bought one from ebay but couldn't get it to fit as high and tight as I wanted, so I used it as a template to make my own, but with mounts to suit the soarer trans tunnel.

Gary Rollason wrote on Thursday, October 22, 2009 - 06:51 am:

Yes it is. As I was going to be changing oil every track day and was fitting an oil cooler anyway I decided to relocate the filter at the same time. I was kinda running out of room as I also had a sandwich plate for oil temp and pressure sender units on the side of the block as well.

Gary Rollason wrote on Thursday, October 22, 2009 - 06:51 am:

It actually sits up next to the chassis rail and is pretty well protected. When viewed from the side there is no protrusion below the fuel lines. If something were to hit the oil filter, it would hit the factory fuel lines as well. Braided lines are just extra insurance. Seeing as I haven't made anything lately, I might make up a little ally 'stone guard' for it or something...
