Hi to all Soarer Enthusiasts,
In regards to the 1jz-gte engines, is a front mount intercooler, and a cat-back exhaust a good start to gain a bit of power. At this stage, is it also a wise move to also get a boost controller to keep things safe?

A boost controller won't help keep things safe as all they do is raise the boost and help with response they do not lower the boost.

Along with the FMIC and Cat back you should really look at finishing the exhaust with a 3" front pipe and 3" hi flow cat. Doing those two mods should see natural boost raise to around 12psi which is safe as long as you change the oil regularly and should give a nice jump in performance.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the verification. At the back of my head, I've had a thought that without no boost controller with a aftermarket exhaust, it could lead to problems, i.e, huge boost spike & detonation of the turbos. :S

chan i would definitely start with a turbo timer.
and before you get it you are letting it cool down for a few minutes before you turn it off ??

yes a fmic is a good start as the smic's are S H I T.

it is also a good idea to upgrade your suspension and brakes before adding more power.

turbo timers are wank factor, waste of money

You dont scream up to your house or destination and turn your car straight of do you, you usually drive the last section fairly slowly, that way by the time you get there the turbos are allready at a respectable temperature.

If you have given it a hard time, 45 seconds is enough

If you are just driving from a to B, park, undo your seatbelt, put up your windows, turn the stereo off, get out of the car and turn it off, 15 seconds and ya done.

Modifying the exhaust would seem to be a bit redundant due to the restriction being in the turbo manifold. IMO

My car and a few others are making well over 250rwkw with standard TT manifold & turbos, if the manifold is a restriction it would be interesting to see how much power can be made on stock turbos.
My car gained over 30rwkw going from a cat back system to a full system and tuned to suit. Installing a decent full exhaust is easily the best value for money upgrade on a TT Soarer. IMO

Someone from WA has run constant mid 12 second passes with the standard intercooler in place. I'm not saying it's the best, but adequate if your after only a small amount of power.

When running a stock cooler and high boost the intake temps will be hotter than running a FMIC which not only won't be as efficient but won't be good long term for the turbos or engine.
