so over the last week i have noticed that after start up my car does a short Sputter or hiccup and a plume of what looks like blue smoke behind me. i only see it around the first start up or the first time i happen to gas it, but i dont see it again for the rest of the drive. the car is a 91 TT and only about 37 000 km on it.
i just had the oil changed about a week or two ago and they put in Castrol Synthetic 5W30. but i dont know if this has anything to do with it because from what ive read and what the local Jap tuners said, i could be looking at a Blown head gasket but i read here that it would be white smoke and my mate says its definitely Blue.

anyone know what the problem is and what the costs/ time of labour i would be looking at if it is a BHG?

I would suggest bad leakin valve stems . Sounds like the oil is too thin . Try going to a 10-40 or 15-50 and see if that helps it any.

thanks for the quick reply!

i went out and picked up some mobil1 10w30 as they didnt have 40 or 50. i took a peek at my coolant and it looked dark but not oily so im still not sure whether its mixed with the oil or not. we will see after i change it in the next week

Any coolant in the oil ? Your other way to check is to do a compression test . Toyota's normally run red coolant , if its old it will look dark brownish if due for a flush and a change .

Hope its not a BHG for ya.
