When I turn my engine on (particularly on a freezing cold morning) I can hear water gushing through the pipes behind my dashboard. I can only assume this means there's air getting in from leak somewhere? If there's no air in the pipes I shouldn't be able to hear water flowing right? When I take off my radiator cap there's no air bubbles rising up and the level is always normal. Any thoughts?

Probably air in the heater matrix. Might be worth checking where the heater hoses join the VSV, keep in mind that the engine needs to be running for the VSV to be open - vacuum actuated.

Hmmm thanks Peter. The water/coolant in my radiator has a rusty coloured film on it too...definitely some kind of oxidization. I'll get it looked at...

i used to have this problem with my v8 soarer under heavy acceleration with the heater partly on and i fixed it the holden way. the vr vs commodores have the problem that bad that gm put a restrictor in one of the hoses to slow down water flow (without it there it sounds like someone flushing a toilet every time you accelerate, now you know why the nick name commode). i went to a wrecker and got a restrictor (looks like a brass 5/8 water pipe joiner with a 8mm hole through the guts) cut a heater hose and added it inline. end of cute noises and the heater still works fine afterward.
